I posted this poll on the community board, and with about 125 answers it looks like about 90% of brides keep it, preserve it and stick it in the attic.

I don't know why this makes me so sad! You spend SO much on the dress of your dreams and then it gets packed away. I wish there was something else you could do with it. Some people had theirs turned into ring bearer pillows and Christening gowns for their children and grandchildren.

Will you keep your gown after you get married?
What will you do with it?
Will you keep or sell your veil & other accessories?

What do you think is a good thing to buy used? I have decided to buy a NEW dress, since I do not want to be limited to style. I think I might look into buying a used veil or crinnie though. I have to look and see if its a decent savings.

I am not sure I will keep my dress. Not sure what to do with it!

At this point, I can't imagine not having it! :lmao:

But I'm big on the anti-clutter thing (Peter Walsh rocks!) so I'm not sure where it will end up later on... maybe a year down the road. I don't think I would sell it - most likely donate it to Brides Against Breast Cancer. :thumbsup2

I am cutting a piece of my mom's dress to have it sewn into my wedding dress and I will probably cut a peice of mine and then donate it. Not a huge peice but a peice. I know that my mom had saved her dress in hopes that one day one of her girls would wear it but the styles change so much that I think that someone could probably get better use of it sooner rather than later and then you never know it may be a cycle where that person donates it and then it is cool to think that the dress that I bought has helped other Brides on their special day!

So if you couldn't get what I was trying to say out of that I am going to donate it! :goodvibes

I'm keeping my dress and probably doing the preserving, keeping it in whatever attic I get, but that's what was done after my grandmother wore it. It's her dress, so already it hasn't just been packed away never to be used again (actually it wasn't really originally because while it was packed away, it was packed away to my basement when I was little and I remember trying it on during dress up at least once when I was probably 8 or 12). and I won't feel bad or sad about packing it away because it wasn't like I spent all this money just to wear it one day The only reason I'll be sad is cuz I'll never get to wear it again except like I wanna try on my prom dress again, lol. and who knows...maybe my future granddaughter (or even daughter) will wanna wear it too! :)

After being married for 32 years now I can say that I still have my wedding dress packed in the same box and I have had it in my closet for that long a time. I have thought many times to take it out and just see if they did put my veil and headpiece in because I can't see it in the little window of the box. My two daughters are married and I never even expected them to want to wear it since styles and tastes change over the years. I am glad that I chose to keep mine and that I still have it. Who knows maybe one of these days I will take it out of the box and maybe just keep it in a gown bag. At least I still have it because I would probably regret it if I had gotten rid of it.

I plan on keeping mine, getting rid of it never really even crossed my mind. My mum kept hers and still has it, and yes both my sister and I used to dress up in it. Until we got to about 10 years old and all of a sudden it was too small!! :rotfl:

My neighbour told me that she cut hers up and used it to make a bunch of matching lamp shades... Which is sort of a nifty idea...

I am keeping mine. I had it cleaned, but not preserved. I think I might drag it out every now and then, parade around the house, and annoy my husband! :) :lmao:

Since mine isn't white-white, I could probably alter it a bit and make a halloween costume. Marie Antoinette? Who knows. I'm just glad I still have it.

The simple one I had from June, I altered to have a balloon hemline and I actually wore it to our Welcome Dinner. So, if you have a simple gown, that's pretty easy to do.

I plan on keeping mine and hope to actually wear it on our anniversary each year! I actaully got the idea from the owner of a bridal shop I went to she told me that she actually does this and thought it was a great idea! She said all her friends think she's crazy but she loves it. She only didn't wear it once and that's because she had a baby the day before:lmao: Another year, I guess their anniversary fell on Thanksgiving and they were hosting Thanksgiving and she answered the door for her guests wearing none other than her wedding dress... that year she said when she bent over to get the turkey out of the oven a few beads popped off so she knew it was time to get back in shape:rotfl: She said she has all sorts of stains on it now but that she still wears it and loves it none the less!

I'll be keeping mine for sure, 'cause I'll be able to wear it again... Its a tea length, 1950s style Emerald Green dress. It'll probably become my special occasion dress.... :goodvibes

I can't imagine not keeping mine. I don't know what I'll do with it: alter it, remove some material, so just stow it away. I have a hard getting rid of most things, so I doubt I'll be able to let go on the dress. Plus my grandmother is buying it, so I can't imagine making a profit off the dress from selling it, and I doubt my 85 year old grandmother would be ok with me selling it.

I am keeping mine and it's being preserved now. I also have the veil in with the dress being preserved. I don't know what I am going to do with it but my mom won't let me cut it up and make something out of it. (She bought it) :rotfl: Maybe one day my daughter, if I have one, may want to wear it. I wouldn't if I was her but you never know. :thumbsup2

I didn't get mine cleaned or packaged. I have it hanging in the bag in a closet and I do have to admit putting in on once or twice since my wedding in 2005. :rolleyes1
My dress wasn't very expensive and I don't think I could ever sell it. I also know it's not something my kids would ever wear again (only a DS so far anyway!) b/c it's mostly tulle so I think I'll just keep it around for me! DH bought a suit for our wedding and he still gets to wear it so why can't I still wear my dress?? :rotfl:

After leaving it hanging in its bag for, like, 8 months, I finally preserved my dress myself using archival tissue and a Sterlite box - but heck if I know what I'll do with it now! :rotfl:

I put my necklace and fascinator on display in a cake stand. Now that there's also a photo of my bouquet next to it, I call it my Wedding Shrine. :teeth:

I kept mine. I didn't have it cleaned because I was quoted $100 and it wasn't dirty much at all, just a couple little dirt stains on the bottom of the train. I wrapped it in acid free/archival tissue paper, put it in a Space Bag, sucked out the air, and into an archival quality box. It is under our bed with my Mom's gown and veil (preserved the same way), and my Godmother's is in there, too. My Grandmother rented her gown as it was the Depression but in the pictures it was a gorgeous gown and I really wish it was still around. My shoes, garter, and tiara are also in the box, along with DH's tie, his bout, 1 flower from my bouquet (the rest didn't make it), and the cork from our champagne bottle.

I did pull my gown out and put it on for our 1st anniversary but it's a big gown and a big hassle to do the tissue paper and Space Bag so I don't know when I'll ever take it out again. I don't even want my potential future daughter or my niece or granddaughter or anyone to wear my dress - it was mine and I loved it and I'm keeping it forever :rolleyes1

My parents just celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary and when they got married, my mom had her dress preserved. My sister Lindsay got married in April and wanted to use my grandmother's dress originally (they just celebrated 55 years of marriage). My grandmas dress was in pretty good condition but couldnt be fitted for lindsay so she tried my mothers dress. Now when my mother got married she was 4'11 and 90 LBS. My sisters and I are all over 5'8 and about 125 LBS. We took out the dress and decided it was probably going to have to be one of our daughters first holy communion dresses or seomthing becuase OMG was it short adn so ity bity in the waist. After everything, lindsay cut off a piece of lace and had it wrapped around her bouquet. I hope to do something similar at my wedding. My mother loves her dress (its an original Oscar De La Renta) and won't let us alter it so her grandkids will have to enjoy it.

I've also heard of several brides going in the Disney pools with their wedding dresses on for their pictures. How fun!!!! Neither of my sisters did that and i know I wont, but wow - what guts!!!!!
