1. With the shift in gender roles of women in society, there is a consequent change in marital relationships, list & discuss the pros & cons of 2 of these changes.

2. Define what a healthy home is. Why you think you're definition is correct. How does one go about constructing a healthy home?

3. Legally, parents are responsible for thei children's behavior until the age of 18. Frequently, when adolescents begin to act out & are out of control it is said that parents should get control of these children. Discuss ways this can happen.

THanks for any input you can share - its a sociology class

While I am a big fan of people doing their own homework, since I just struggled through a mental block writing my own paper, I will do my best to help with some small ideas....

But you have to do your own work! So take our ideas, and expand on those........and use your brain :thumbsup2 mine is pretty fried tonight so sorry if my thoughts are incoherent...

1. women are working more and pursuing their own careers, so women are getting married later in life (more in 30's plus whereas it used to be early 20's) this leads to possible fertility issues, having children later in life when older.....yada yada and women may now be the primary breadwinner, which could lead to a dad being a stay at home dad instead of it always being mom, average age of marriage is def older now

2. A healthy home is a safe home, where children feel unconditionally loved and everyone feels safe.

3. no clue- teenagers are all nuts.

for number one- i'de need to know what 'shift' is being spoken to. i think it's easy to assume that it's more women in the workplace, but honestly-that shift happened quite a while back so i don't think esp. the young marrieds of today are experiencing any kind of different marital relationships than they say their parents modeling as they grew up.

the shift i see happening that i think is interesting is one of a 'retro' nature-i am seeing more and more young women who are absolutly planning on not pursuing extensive post highschool education or careers because they are committed to being stay at home wives and subsequently stay at home moms. i'm also seeing and hearing about women who have been on the career track but because they have lost their jobs due to the economy being initialy 'forced' into the role of sahm's-but coming to the realization that they prefer it, and when they factor out the expenses they had due to their careers (childcare, convenience foods, commute, professional attire...) they are finding that in many cases they were just breaking even on what they assumed was income they had to bring in to help support their family (and a good number are planning on not returning to their careers).

for number two- if i were writing the essay (especialy for a sociology class, and doubly so if it's a non intro to sociology type class where you are getting into social work concepts) i'de make sure to detail what the current legal minimum adequate standard of care is defined as, and then talk to whatever other elements you've studied and discussed in class (the question is not what YOU THINK is or what your personal OPINION is, but what the definition is, how you validate that definition and apply it.

for number three-you might want to look at how many states have changed their laws such that when children reach a certain age (and it can be fairly young in some states) if they willfully cause damage or act out in ways where civil liability can occur, the parents cannot be held financialy accountable (and civil judgements can be entered against the minor child). in some ways this seems to aknowledge that even with the best of intentions, the best efforts on a parent's part, some kids cannot be 'controlled'

I hate to highjack your thread OP but I'm sufferng from major writers block as well anyone want to help me to?

Who its audience of the National Enquirer?
Should journalists be in charge of watching government and other leaders?
Should journalism play on emotions as well as distribute information,, is the point to entertain the masses, not educate them?

There actually is a book where you can do this research, it is called " History of the Wife" by Marilyn Yalom, you can probably rent it in the library or googlebooks has it online, but those are some limited passages. The last chapter actually answers some of these questions you have presented, such as number one and two.

I'm thinking, judging by the questions, that the answers your professor wants are in your text book or lecture notes. The questions are very broad and could be answered very differently depending on what level of sociology course it is. I'll give the first one a go.

Con: Women are working more outside the home and yet are still responsible for the care of the children and making sure that the household runs smoothly. The shift to two income families has not caused men (as a group)to contribute more inside the home with children, cooking, cleaning, etc.. Despite working outside the home, many studies show that women do significantly more work around the house than men. While women are left feeling tired and resentful, men say that they want to help more but don’t make the sacrifices needed in order to do that. It puts strains on families and marriages because women feel torn in two different directions and that they can't give 100% to their careers or their families.
You can find supporting studies and research for this by googling Arlie Hochschild and The Second Shift.

It has been a while since I read through "The Second Shift" but I do recall some rather significant problems with her reasoning. She compared the housework done by men with full-time jobs against housework done by women with part-time jobs, and defined housework so as to include laundry, dishes, and child care, but not mowing the lawn, shoveling the walk, etc.

The U of Michigan Institute for Social Research has found that women do an average of 27 hours of housework per week, versus 16 for men. But, they have also found that men spend an average of 14 hours more per week, which is why men and women report having essentially the same amount of leasure time.

I think the shift of women moving into the workplace has increased the divorce rate. Not necessarily a bad thing--it's not like marriages were perfect before; women just did not leave their husbands unless they were extremely unsatisfied (if then) due to financial reasons and a social stigma that has somewhat disappeared.

humm, I have an Animal Diversity abstract that was due yesterday on Diatom- Feeding Behavior of the Free living Marine Nematode Chromadorita Tenuis. Anyone want to take a crack at that??;)

Thanks so much for the help! Y'all have my brain flowing now - and yes I'm still doing my work - I didn't give you all the essays I have to write - I see this as no different than discussing the work with someone from class to get a jumpstart. :thumbsup2

I'm not much help here either - but I'll take a shot -

I'm guessing the N'tl Enq's audience is mainly for women - in their 30s - 40s

Yes I think journailist should report on government & leaders - but not necessarily reporting every detail of their private lives - just the work their doing though if they do something that contradicts something they have taken a stand on.

I think to a point you have to entertain the masses or noone would ever turn on the news - its too depressing. Playing on emotions is a tough one - 'cause you want people to understand & connect with your story & the best way to draw people in is by using emotion. Showing the real-life story of the child who lost their parents from Aids, you can't grab anyone just by sitting in a studio & reading the teleprompter - ya know?

See I told you I wasn't much help! LOL
