Will You Ever Watch A Poorly Reviewed Movie?

I watch movies that are rated grade Z. I find them entertaining.....What can I say, some of us are bad movie fans. Especially the horrible campy corny stuff. Oh so funny....

Ex. "Tokyo Zombie" anyone? So bad, but so funny....Or how about "Meteor", "Volcano", or "Stonehenge Apocalypse".:rotfl:

I do like good movies as well. I just like movies.
Hey! I liked Volcano!!!!

Yes, I will watch movies that aren't highly-rated or well-reviewed. If I like the premise, or the description, or an actor, or if I've read the book (okay, in fairness, I've tried several times and simply can't watch "Confessions of a Shopaholic" in its entirety) and enjoyed it...

I'm not a reviewer or a critic and I don't think like them. Conversely, they don't think like me. I see what I want to see.

I love watching him on Hollywood Dailies, so I'm happy to hear that he really is a nice guy because he certainly seems to be!!!

Richard Roeper is the one who drives me nuts. I have no opinion of him personally, but he reviews every movie as if it's main purpose in being greenlit should be to win an Oscar.

Drives. Me. Bonkers.

I love Oscar-bait movies. But also understand and appreciate the value of entertainment for the sake of entertainment. I just watched Going the Distance tonight and it was awesomely, realistically raunchy and a quick scan on Rotten Tomatoes reveals that I am, indeed, in the minority when i say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not every movie needs to leave you breathless or mad at the world.

That is exactly how I felt about The Cider House Rules.

OH, I just so totally agree with you! Only about 3-4,000 people vote on the Oscars and how many others of us are out there enjoying movies? A lot more than 4,000, I'm sure. If they only made movies to win Oscars, I'd be out of work! And people like me and you ENJOY movies just because they are entertaining.

Have you read Gary Marshall's autobiography? You might enjoy it.

I just got "Despicable Me" from Netflix, so we will see how it goes. ;)

I'm surprised if it got bad reviews, too. We loved it. Laughed, cried, etc etc.

For example ~ I've never seen Titanic.

Neither have I. Same with DH. We bonded over that fact when we met. :) Recently I've been drawn to see it, but then I can't say "I've never seen Titanic" anymore. :3dglasses

Anyway, one of my fave movies is Armageddon (hubby feels the same, another bonding moment). And I've now seen Mamma Mia so many times I am actually liking Pierce Brosnan's "singing" voice. I'll just end with that, LOL.

Someone mentioned Despicable Me. I thought that it got good reviews? I do know that it has made a ton of money and I loved it. :)

I love horror movies and most critics hate all horror movies so I learned long ago to ignore critics. I see what looks appealing and often enjoy movies that make little money and think "eh" when I see critical darlings.

I think most professional reviewers, and many regular folks, are very consistent in the reliability of their reviews. The issue is that they're (consistently) telling you how good the movie is with regard to their criteria. That's fine - perfect, really - if your criteria and theirs happen to match. There's no reason to think that it does, unless you've already established that your preferences and theirs match.

I think the mistake many people make, in evaluating professional reviews, is assuming that the reviewer is saying how good a film is objectively. Since each person has different likes and dislikes, that's not possible, despite protestations claiming that one set of criteria or another has primacy.

So the challenge, for us, is to find people who have the same sensibilities as we have, and then we can rely on their reviews (to the extent that those people are consistent).

And this applies to practically everything, not just movies. Different people have different preferences, and no one's is right and no one's is wrong - it's just a matter of which preferences you have.

We see this quite often on the DIS with regard to restaurant reviews, too: While there are certain trends - some restaurants more favored than others - that is little solace to you if the restaurant so many people like doesn't satisfy your preferences.

So to answer the OP: I won't ever watch a film that is poorly reviewed in consideration of my criteria.

I LOVE apocalypse movies....but Stonehenge Apocalypes was the worst movie ever!:lmao: ever!it was awesomely awful.

:lmao: (Worst movie ever is "Shark Boy and Lava Girl" for me and "Spy Kids 3".)

I would not call that "the worst" compared to the stuff I watch but it was pretty bad. I gave it points for originality as far as an apocalyptic move, which I try to see all of them.

I had to watch because the main character plays an angel in a TV series I watch called "Supernatural".

I mentioned "Despicable Me" and I have no idea what the reviews are. That was my point, I don't read reviews, I just watch movies.

I have all the movie channels & Netflix. Plus I am a regular watching SyFy, Chiller, BET, Current, & Logo. You REALLY get some interesting movies on those channels.:lmao:

No, but I will have to add it to my list. Thanks for the recommendation :thumbsup2 I am a self-confessed entertainment junkie. I live for this stuff.

Plan 9 From Outer Space was a cinematic masterpiece compared to The Happening or The Thin Red Line.

I gave Shark Boy and Lava Girl 10/10 on imdb and actually wrote a review because my son absolutely LOVED it. I'd never seen him so thrilled with a movie, but I had to admit, it was 100% aimed at young kids. There were no "over their heads" jokes to keep the parents entertained, and the plot resembled a rambling story told by a child (the movie was written by the director's son, so that makes sense.) For what it was and the audience it was aimed at, I thought it hit the mark, but I would rather stay home and clean under my fridge than have to sit through it again.

DS rewatched it--or rather part of it--recently. He couldn't believe how mindnumbingly stupid and awful it was. Guess my baby is growing up. ;)

I watch a lot of poorly reviewed movies if I'm interested in the genre, or if I like somebody in the cast. There are some panned movies that I have felt weren't as bad as the critics made them out to be. Sometimes I'll watch a bad movie just to laugh at bad acting or bad writing.

I don't worry what others say. I'm sure they don't like my favorite Pauly Shore movies "Encino Man" and "Son in Law!" :lmao:

I never pay attention to critics, I pay attention to what I think about a movie. We watch poorly rated movies all the time, makes no difference here. :)

I learned a long time ago that people will always dislike or hate things more than I will, and vice versa. My attitude when someone tells me a movie is not good is, I'll be the judge of that. Now I am not saying I won't also dislike that same movie, but I like to make my own decisions on what is good or not.
This goes for television shows as well.
