So we are staying at Old Key West for our November trip. Looking at it online, I' beginning to wonder if we'll like it there. The pool looks nice, we like the look of Olivia's, but the rooms make me nervous. They look sort of outdated, and I don't know if that's how they are or that's how the pictures are making them look. So my question is, for those of you who have stayed there, will we like it? Please keep in mind the only other DVC resorts we have stayed in are SSR,the treehouses at SSR and AKV. All very new. TIA

The resort was designed to look like "old" Key West, there is currnetly a renovation going on that makes the rooms look more like the other resorts (lots of use like the old look) but you will probably be happier.

Oh, ok cool. thanks. Do you know when the reno will be complete?

You don't say what size room you will be in, but OKW has the largest villas in all WDW. The studios have 2 queen beds, no sofabed. The 1 bdrm in Enormous.

The main pool is lots of fun and it's only a short boat ride to DTD.

It's our favorite resort! Enjoy.

We're in a 2 bedroom

I am at OKW now and was very nervous about staying here too. The moment we walked in we all 4 were instantly in love with the place. We are in a one bedroom and it is bigger than my DH's and mine's first house together. We are not in a renovated room, so that doesn't factor in my opinion. We love, love, love it here. My kids, girls 9 and 12, want to stay in the community hall and pool all the time. We are having to drag them to the parks, well, not really, but you get the idea.:rotfl: We will be staying here in the future. This trip was meant to be a laid back trip and we couldn't have picked a better DVC.

A surprising (to me) number of people really love OKW. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I'll bet you'll have a wonderful time.

My family stayed there last year and we all loved it. The 2 bedroom is HUGE and the resort itself is very relaxing and tranquil. Once you get the ins and outs together with the bus schedule (for around the resort) it doesn't seem like such a huge resort anymore. My in-laws who are die hard SSR fans came over for a visit and were impressed at how similar the feel was to SSR but the difference in the size of the villas was what really made their jaws drop.

WOW that good huh,:lmao:. I'm excited now. Have a great time!!!

You'll love it! The rooms in buildings 30-43 have been renovated, and by the time of your visit, there will be quite a few more added to that list.

The theme of the resort is turn of the last century Key West. It's very beachy/cottage looking. Fits it's theme well, or did before the renos. We'll see how we like it the "new" way once we visit in a newly remodeled room.

You'll LOVE the huge balcony with a table and 4 chairs for dining and a ceiling fan for those summer evenings.

Another fan of OKW here. The rooms, pools, and atmosphere are among our favorites. Very relaxed, yet close to the action.

We were Charter Members of OKW, and have never, ever regretted our decision.

Have fun! :thumbsup2

Not all the rooms...I wish! We are staying in a very "unrenovated" room in bldg. 37. We still love it though and I'm kind of glad I know what they looked like before so I know what to compare it to. I'm not sure why ours isn't renovated, but we are on the first floor and it is most definately not renovated.

We have stayed there twice before the renovations (I think both times in a 1 bdrm in the turtle pond section) and we LOVE this resort. It has such a laid back feeling and the rooms are so much bigger than the others. I think you will love it!

Just returned yesterday from OKW. OP, you will love the 2br. It is HUGE!! The only thing I can complain about are the beds...they are extremely firm. The first night was uncomfortable but after that it wasn't as bad, especially after walking the parks for many, many hours.

As for refurbs, I asked specifically which were completed and they are buildings 30, 31, 32, 33, 40 & 43. It looks as if they are going to do all the buildings on Turtle Pond Road first. The projection is for all to be completed by this time next year. If they continue at the same pace, they should be through by then.

Why is it surprising to you? Have you ever stayed there? We LOVE OKW, and miss it when we are at the other, smaller DVC units.

We are scheduled to stay at OKW in Dec and I posted the exact same thing not too long ago. After reading the posts and looking at some videos on youtube that were posted here and that I found over there we are beyond excited to stay there. We are actually talking about calling and canceling out waitlist at BLT for that trip. The room size and layout look awesome. My kids are excited to try the pool and some of the activities. Olivias looks yummy as well. I keep telling the kids its like 2 vacations in one. They get the fun of the parks but the relaxing vibe of OKW!!

We just returned from a BWV/OKW split stay last night. Like yourself, I was very nervous about OKW - not sure if we would care for the look of the room, not sure about the proximity to the pool area (we love the hustle and bustle). Let me say that we were so pleased! We were in a studio, and we went to the desk yesterday afternoon and asked to be shown a 1 bedroom for future reference! We fell in love!!! We own at BLT, and have stayed in a 1 bedroom there, but this had such a homey feeling! The decor in my opinion is HORRIBLE - which gives it a certain charm! Even while I was showering in the pink bath tub/shower, I was thinking - this reminds me of an extremely old home that has never been changed and has a comfortable feel to it.
Another plus that I haven't found at BLT or the Boardwalk is that the bathroom by the pool has several showers that have this great whole body shampoo, as well as a blow dryer. We were able to hang out at the pool until 2:00 and then a quick shower before we were off to the airport.
We have decided that we would DEFINATLY go back. In fact, we even talked about putting our BLT up for sale, and then buying re-sale at OKW - problem is that we would owe too much, as we have only been owners for a year and a half.
By the way, we were in room 6410! PERFECT!

Every DVC resorts has its own set of pros and cons...and that set of pros and cons differs by DVCer, right? What appeals to one person will be a "downside" to another.

But here's the thing--you can't go wrong with ANY of the DVC properties, imo. They are all unique and all have wonderful benefits. Sure, we have our favorites, but we love it wherever we stay. And if you go in with that attitude, then you won't be disappointed. It's DVC!

You'll be staying in GREAT accommodations, with a full kitchen, a balcony, a washer/dryer, a resort with a nice sit down restaurant, a pool with a water slide, a Community Hall with activities for the kids--and I just described every DVC.

Hi, so I thought I would join the chain and ask... I am going in January and have the choice between the Boardwalk Villas (1 Bedroom) or Old Key West. Any opinions?

I am really going just to relax and kick back. It's a Girls Getaway! No kids.

Thanks,

Let's put it this way... we ultimately joined DVC because of our stay at OKW last year! Our 1-bedroom villa was HUGE!

We just got back from a stay at BCV which I fell in love with as well for it's proximity to Epcot and SAB. My point is that each resort has it's perks. For me OKW is very comfortable, homey, quiet and has a unique tropical atmosphere which is right up my alley. It depends on what you are looking for. Don't worry too much, I really think you are going to enjoy it! :goodvibes
