Will this change my position on the waitlist queue?

So I have one extra night waitlisted at the beginning of my trip. It's been a while and it still hasn't come through. I do not have anything else booked that night as a back up plan, because for my family we will make our flight arrangements based on whether we get the date or not. We don't want to stay somewhere else and move if it doesn't come through. But we are meeting my brother's family there and I'm wondering if I should book something else just in case they find a good deal on flights the earlier day. My concern is that won't leave sufficient points for the waitlist. If I amend my current waitlist with a note to cancel the other reservation if it comes through, will that change to my waitlist cause me to move to the back of the line? Will it require the CM to cancel my old waitlist and create a new one?

I'm in a similar boat... waiting on a waitlist for December to add one evening at the start of the trip. No idea whether it's going to come up or not and having to book airfare. So, I booked a nearby Courtyard for that one night using a rate that is cancel-able at no fee up to a couple days in advance.
