All 3 of my kids have some sort of disbaility. My 2 younger ones age 6 and 4 will have their strollers as wheelchairs. They are not disabled, so can transport. Just need them confined into something and away from crowds. The 6yr old is a flight risk. There is 10 of us going, so I could see the possibility of us splitting up. Would they give each kid a GAC so we can split up? I can see me having to deal with a meltdown and have to take a break with a kiddo.

My oldest has anxiety issues along with Adhd, she does pretty good. But im the same way if its very crowded and I have someone right up against me I get overwhelmed and uaully leave.

It is my understanding that you will need to get 1 GAC per person as each persons needs are different. Since the older 2 will be using stroller as wheelchair if you are using a double stroller instead of a single for each, then you could potentially get just 1 GAC but that is only if they will be together on each ride. HTH

I will have 2 single strollers for the younger 2. My 8yr old walks.

I have two children with ASD, and usually behaviors start with my DD and it aggravates DS who has sensory issues. When this happens, we end up having a full-on "code orange" melt-down with both. Because of this, we often split up in the parks, or my DS will often want to leave the parks a little early to swim at the resort. We have never had any problem getting a GAC for both of them. I have explained it to the CM in the past, but they didn't even really care - they both very obviously have autism, so - they each get a GAC, no problems....

We were at DW for spring break & were told we could only get one GAC even though we have two disabled children but that it was good for up to 6 people. We had to tell them the name of the child we wanted the card prepared for. We have 6 in our family but were also meeting Grandma so what we did was have my husband go back later with one of our boys & get the 2nd card in his name. Our kids don't always want to do the same things & a card for each meant we could split up and we could all stay together when Grandma was with us. I'm surprised others got a 2nd card so easily because they were adamant that we could only have one.

kellykins, I'm surprised they insisted on only giving you 1 card because GAC is "personal" and intended for the specific needs of 1 individual. I suppose if both your children had exactly the same needs, they might have felt 1 was adequate, but as you pointed out if the family wishes to separate you need separate cards.

GoofyG, you shouldn't have a problem getting separate GAC for each child, based on his/her needs. It sounds like those needs may vary, anyway. Just tell the CM that you would like separate GACs because the family doesn't plan to stay together throughout the day.

Enjoy your vacation!

We were surprised too but it was our first time getting the card so we didn't know any better. I do have to say that the woman who helped us was the most unfriendly cast member we've ever encountered in all our years visiting Disney. I don't know if she's always like that or if she was just frustrated from dealing with difficult people before she got to us. Either way, WE were polite and didn't deserve the snotty attitude we got. I think if we had had the CM my husband had when he went back for our 2nd card, there might not have been a problem. We solved the problem ourselves by getting them separately and had a wonderful trip so it's all good.

I am a little confused, If your youngest 2 are not disabled, why do they need stroller as wheelchair? This is designed for those children who would need a wheelchair but because of their size find a stroller more comfortable. If your children have sensory issues you can ask for alternate waiting or other assistance. Not trying to take issue with you, just wondering why your non-disabled children would need this accomodation.

They are on the spectrum. My 6 yr old is a flight risk. We were told by her therapist to do her stroller that way. We had been many times and with major meltdowns an me sitting out with her while everyone else was in line. Being able to keep her in a stroller which is her personal space till time to ride or something. This will only be our 2nd time I do this, but we had the best trip when we did this. We only had 1 melt down that I had to go back trough the crowd. I want to be able I take a trip and enjoy a trip with my family, with out being physically and mentally worn down by my child I love!! I Have 2 kids on the spectrum, also 6yr old has ADHD along with my oldest who has ADHD and anxiety. I want them to be able to enjoy their trip too!!!
I'm sorry but it does upset me for people to wonder why I do what for my kids. I have a hard enough time with family. I do whats best for my kids. I would have never thought to do this until their therapist mentioned it. Their OT, has helped a lot with planning and showing me what would be better for the kids. She is the one that works with them weekly!

OP, you sound like a great mom and you and your family deserve to have a great vacation. Maybe the poster who questioned you, did not read your original posting throughly where you did mention that all your children had a disability. Some people are sensitive because, unfortunately people have gotten GAC's or said they were disabled when they were not. I am sure the poster meant no harm. I can understand your feelings about being questioned by someone else. Only YOU know your children the best. Do whatever works for you and your children and have a great vacation. :)

I think the confusion came when the op said two did not have a disability but needed stroller as wheelchair. They dont have a physical disability but autism is a disability.

Strollers are used as wheelchairs for a variety of reasons.
Sometimes, it is for children who are not physically able to walk or can't walk the whole distance in a day at WDW because of their disability.

Sometimes, it is for children with disabilities who can physically walk, but will refuse to walk, run away or need a safe haven while waiting.

That is actually one of the big reasons people use strollers as wheelchairs.
It has been advice on this board for children with autism since we first started getting questions about autism.

Many attractions don't have alternate places to wait and/or that place can be very busy or noisy. Many people have posted that they can wait in the regular lines using a stroller as wheelchair because the stroller provides the safe place their child needs while waiting.

That is possible, although that poster did mention getting a GAC instead.
Sometimes people only consider what they have done and don't consider what might work better for someone else. Many people would not think of using a stroller as a wheelchair for children who can walk because it doesn't sound like an obvious connection.

My guess is that poster had never heard of using a stroller as a wheelchair and was asking about it, not meaning any harm or questioning parenting.
When reading on the Internet, all you have is words.
In real life, body language, tone of voice nd facial expression add a lot of meaning that make the meaning and intent of the words more clear.

There is an explanation of using a stroller as a wheelchair in post 6 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread if anyone wants to read more. That thread is near the top of this board or you can use the link in my signature to get there.

Many use a stroller as a wheelchair when not physically disabled as like you said its a safe haven for children on the spectrum or that have issues with being in a crowd!!

What you OT has told you about using a stroller as their safe place is some of the best advice that can be offered,It works wonderful and stops many meltdowns etc! Im pleased you found this out on your last trip and that it helped you to have a great time :)

I hope your next trip is even more magical :thumbsup2

Using a stroller as a wheelchair is one of the best ways to prevent meltdowns in children that are on the spectrum,or that have other invisable needs..
Having sensory issues is not always sorted by having a seperate waiting area infact it actually is much better and easier for the parent if the child stays in the stroller until it is time to get on to the ride.
Just because you dont have a physical disability does not mean you are not disabled! I hope you know understand that using the stroller as a wheelchair is NOT just for those who can not walk and that it makes life alot better and the trip more managable for the parent giving the whole family a great time.:thumbsup2

Goofy G, I can totally relate, it is a juggling act when you have a child on the spectrum, and when you add another, it can be chaos at its finest! There have been many times these past 16 years that I didn't know whether to scratch my watch or wind my butt, they kept me so busy!!:upsidedow

I think using the strollers as a wc is great! My son used to elope, and there is nothing in this world compared to the peace of mind in knowing that your child is safe and you don't have to be constantly "on guard" that they're "makin' a break for it"! Thankfully he outgrew the eloping, but I remember those days all too well! The extra GAC will also give you the freedom to split up and deal with whatever comes your way.

Have a great time! I hope you have someone in that group of ten who can maybe watch the kiddies while you have a drink or two at the resort lounge some night!

I would get three different cards. From what you said, it sounds like you will break off into groups at some point and you want to make sure all their needs are met. When my cousin went, they got seperate GAC's for their sons who both have the same diagnosis.

Thanks everyone, their therapist wrote up something for me to go off and tell them what my kids will need. (Don't worry not talking the letter in, it is a write up for me to go off of) I did discover this week that my son is going to be a flight risk too. He bolted off the elevator right as the doors were shutting. I will ask for 3 gac for my kiddos.
