Will the Apple Store take returns without a receipt?

A family member gave DS an Ipod shuffle as a gift, but he already has an Ipod Touch. He didn't want to look ungrateful so just smiled and said thanks, but now he's saying that he doesn't want or need it and would rather have the $$.
He said that this family member will never notice that he doesn't use it since we see each other maybe 2-3 times a year.

How is the Apple Store about returns? Are we out of luck if we don't have a receipt?

TIA for any info!

Do you know for sure it was purchased from the Apple store? If it was they always ask for an email address when purchasing so they can look up the purchase with just an email address. Now I'm not sure if that would be good enough to do a return. Maybe an exchange but I doubt you would get the cash. What if they purchased it with a credit card? Also if you were able to have them look up the purchase & find it with the email address then they do an exchange I'm certain they would send that email address the receipt of the exchange. So the person who bought it would know you returned it.

Personally, I would just call the family member and tell them your DS has an iPod & ask if they have a receipt so you can exchange it.

The reason I know it was bought at the store was that I heard them telling DS that they were sorry his wasn't engraved with his name, they bought it at the store and then found out later that they could get items engraved when they bought from apple.com. They got another Ipod shuffle for my DD online and that one is engraved.

I'm just afraid that they'll be offended if we asked about a return.

Well thank God they didn't get it engraved! :rotfl:

Why would they be offended? It's not like he doesn't want it because he didn't like it or is ungrateful. He already has an iPod.

If you really want to avoid it then why not sell it on Ebay? If it's upopened he could probably get very close to what they sell it for at the store. Then he could have the money to get whatever he wants. :thumbsup2

I think you are right about this one. I try really hard not to tell someone that we do not love their gift.

Best case scenario is exchange--I don't believe they will give you a refund without a receipt. Even with a receipt, a refund would be in the form of original payment which is likely credit back to the buyer's card.

I received an iPod shuffle as a gift, but since I already have an iPhone, I tried to return it. They were able to look up the receipt because it is attached to the serial number of the product. They have me a gift card for the amount-which I saved & used it for my phone upgrade. :) the employee told me the giver wouldn't know, unless of course they intentionally tried to find out.

Even if they did accept it, without the receipt, they would not be able to give you any cash. You would most likely get a gift card/store credit. Plus, even if you DID have the receipt, the refund would most likely have to be in the original form a payment. So a credit card purchase would be returned to that card. If you didn't have the original form of payment, you should most likely again get a gift card/store credit.
