Will new security delay getting to *connecting* flight?

Since I'm staying within the "sterile area" beyond the security checkpoints, I see no reason why I might be delayed in getting to my connecting flight; however, I'm already cutting it close and I am worried about anything that might make me miss that second flight! Travel gurus, what say you?

It might, as you will have to be screened again before boarding the second flight, for liquids or other banned items you may have purchased in the gate area.

If that's the case, they'd be delaying themselves by checking everyone, giving me more time to get there, right? I'm making sure that I have a clearly uncluttered carry-on with no restricted items!

Screened again generally takes place at the gate. They won't close the jetway door and take off the plane while people are still in that line.

If you miss a connection as a result of the orange alert, it's the same deal as missing the connection in a more ordinary fashion. The airline must still honor your ticket and endeavor to get you to your destination with due dispatch.

Missing a connection due to security is considered as a schedule interruption outside the airline's control. The airline is typically obligated to accommodate you on their next flight with available seating in your fare class.

However, if you stay in the "sterile area" you shouldn't experience an additional significant delay during your connection. Everyone gets re-checked at the gate, and once you're at the gate, they won't close the door on you.
