We are flying out 9/10, back on 9/21. I know there are still 2 months left, but ours are the only seats booked on the return flight, and maybe 5 others on the outgoing. Spoke to a rep, who said that they might change the type of aircraft, but they wouldn't cancel based on open seats. She said they transport airline workers, standbys, etc if there are extra seats. Is this true? I told DH we should have an alternate flight in mind in case its not, but he is of the opinion we shouldn't worry about it.

Figure it this way. Based on the current published (not publicly published, but 'set') schedule plane needs to be at your destination airport to take passengers to another destination. Outright cancelling the flight would require a LOT of shuffling.

Coming back from Las Vegas Christmas night, my flight was exactly 1/3 occupied. There were other (connecting) flights to which they could have transferred us, but again, 'my' plane had to be in Boston the next morning, to take passengers somewhere else.

AND, OP's flight is still 2 1/2 months away. There is plenty of time to fill that plane up.

I just flew home from Las Vegas. When I checked in online at the 24 hour mark, there were seriously less than 10 seats occupied. I had choice of nearly the entire plane. No one paid for their seats. The plane ended up being about 80% full, so there is no way I could go by what the seat map said.......

We flew home on SW last September and my Dh and I were 2 of 8 people on the plane! The flight attendent told us they would fly empty because either way the plane has to get to Buffalo to pick up people flying to Orlando.

3 weeks ago Jetblue cancelled my return flight home for October. There was a 6:30PM and a 1:30PM on a Saturday return to Dulles. I was booked on the 6:30PM and it got cancelled and they moved us to the 1:30PM. So OP, yes they can cancel. Just keep watching. They will move you to whatever alternative flight you want or refund you. Know your options.
