Will I lose fp+ if I cancel hotel reservation?

We've got an on-site reservation for the end of March. We have annual passes. I made my fp+ once the window opened up for our trip.

We are now thinking of staying offsite and canceling the dis hotel. Is this going to cause our fp+ to disappear?

Had you stayed on-site previously and already had magic bands or was this your first use of them? We haven't had bands before, so I'm worried what could go wrong.

I had scheduled a trip in February and had to cancel it. I have an AP but that was to be my first on-site stay since the Magic Bands started. When I cancelled the reservation my fastpass+ selections stayed. I had to manually delete them. Not sure if it matters or not, but Disney had already sent me my Magic Band before I cancelled the reservation. Keep in mind this was a month ago and things might be different now.

Is there a cancellation fee to cancel your reservation? I'm considering my options of booking thru Disney or renting DVC points and staying in a Villa. Disney I can book out 499 in advance, DVC points I can only book out like 11 months in advance (if they have anything available for us where we want to stay). So I thought I'd go ahead and book with Disney to guarantee we'll have a room for our vacay, but then cancel if I am able to get DVC points to stay in a villa.

You can cancel packages prior to 45 days out and room only 5 or 6 days out without penalty.

Exact opposite happened to our friends. They cancelled a Feb. reservation to stay off-site after receiving the bands and they lost all FP+. They are AP holders, so the link to the band stayed, but had to do all their FP+ at the kiosks.
