My DD was thrilled when Delta offered a bump with upgrade on a flight an hour later and $200 travel certificate. When she got to the next gate, she was told that flight was overbooked and she was 7th in line. Delta had offered many voluntary bumps to this sold out flight. She had an 8 hour layover before the next leg and thought she would be fine, but it was scary.
Be careful before taking a bump--make sure the next flight has seats!

OT: A lot of people volunteer a second time. Some come away with a second travel certificate in the same day.

Actually someone who wants to volunteer can ask the gate agent before s/he makes an announcement for volunteers. So it is not that important to just be standing in just the right place if the agent does make the announcement.

And, with any advance system of getting volunteers, the airline still has to tell, similarly in advance, when the next available flight will be or that nothing specific is offered.
