Will I be allowed to eat seafood and nuts?

I read a recent thread where a person said their kids were not allowed to get butter because of her allergy. My DH is allergic to seafood and my daughter is allergic to tree/peanuts. Does this mean I won't be able to order anything that contains these?

I am allergic to mango, however, my family was free to order anything with mango in it.

I think some peoples allergies are more severe then others, so it's up to you to communicate what you can and can't have at the table.

I'm sure it depends on what your family is comfortable with. If you are okay with eating nuts and seafood around them then it shouldn't be a problem.

I didn't happen to read that thread. It may depend on how that child's allergy manifests. If there is concern about airborne or cross-contamination, I suppose they might restrict options for the table. Honestly, though, I've never heard of the rest of the party being restricted due to another person's allergy. I will say they take allergies seriously, and if there is any slight question about an item it will not be served to the guest with the allergy. The Club/Lab will be very particular about your daughter's allergies and may restrict her from some of the cooking activities and such.

Enjoy your cruise!

that makes me remember the person posting a long time ago who wanted her allergic child to experience communal dining, so she wanted the family to be seated with other parties, but she wanted to stipulate that the other parties would not be able to order anything containing whatever it was the child was allergic to because she didn't want it at the table. She got upset when other posters said they'd ask for a different table assignment.

In this case, if you make it clear that your husband and kid just can't ingest these items and have no issues being around them, you should have no problems with what you want to order.

Dd, when younger, was contact anaphylactic to peanuts. We did not let anyone eat them around her, for fear of residue. That is thankfully not the case now. She still can't eat them, however. I think on our cruise this summer the staff asked about whether there was an issue with others eating her allergens. I can't imagine DCL would insist on restricting the rest of the table if the family is ok with it.

I can totally see a family, who is dining with another family and worried about contact, to ask to restrict what was sent to anyone at the table. That's what we would have done when dd was younger. That said, I would have requested we eat alone, since that's not really fair to the other family.

My answer is Maybe. My mom is allergic to crab and calamari and due to her stroke can not eat rice or spaghetti (some difficulty swallowing). On the one cruise, the server had her pre-order her meals. On Pirate night, she pre-ordered the shrimp and scallop pasta with penne - even though there was no allergen in that meal, the sauce was very different and instead of sea scallops, it was made with bay scallops (I guess the person making the dish made some assumption about my mother not being able to eat sea scallops). I was served the same sauce and bay scallops as well instead of the regular version (though I had the spaghetti that the meal is normally made with).

My wife has a shellfish allergy and I was able to order shellfish. Our server asked her about it the first night, and it was never brought up again until one night when she ordered fish. The server just confirmed that it was only shellfish and no other seafood.

I am allergic to shellfish and shrimp. I preordered all my meals with changes as needed. My husband happily ordered crab, lobster, scallops, and shrimp. He doesn't get it at home so he took advantage while we were in the ship. You shouldn't have a problem ordering whatever you prefer.

Seems to be up to the server. I've only had it once at Disney where they said I couldn't have the lobster because the fiance is allergic. After that he doesn't mention it and only asks if the sauce has lobster or crab in it. He thinks it is silly that they would assume me having it would make him have a reaction. Now he calls it a "preference" when he asks if a bisque has either ingredient in it and only uses the word allergy if pushed.

I wouldn't order anything with nuts around my daughter even though her issue is only with consumption but, the shellfish I will order with no problem. I have not included the shellfish allergy on our reservation because he has no problem avoiding it. I may just leave it off and call it a preference as well.

Just wanted to add we don't mention his allergy because it isn't life threatening. He just needs a Benadryl and a nap at this point. If it every causes his throat to swell we will probably mention it but right now he just gets uncomfortable.

I have some food allergies, but not severe. I mentioned them on one cruise. The ordering meals the night before routine turned out to be a nightmare for me. I know what I can and cannot have. I will never mention them again........except MSG. But, I also know that some MSG goes unnoticed by the chefs.

That was me where they refused to bring butter because of my dairy issues. I just had a really bad serving team. They were awful the entire cruise and we had to get the head waiter involved more than once. I have been a lot of cruises and this team was the worst I have ever had. Certainly didn't serve me with any of the magic and pixie dust LMAO!!!

I thought I read it on this board. Thanks for posting. I don't want any hassle on my vacay so I will not mention it.....I don't get to eat it much at home because of the allergy so I plan to eat as much as I can while someone else is cooking.

lol, I love the disclaimer. We don't know the extent of his allergy because he has only had it once in his life. It was way before my time so I can't really remember what happened but, I think we will be good...If not I will just blame you. J/K

and for me, personally, if its a tolerance issue, i kind of police my own food. i'm allergic to shellfish, but not (thus far HA!) anaphalactically so when i ate meat, i just basically checked out and avoided those items or things that would (logically) be a problem. some restaurants etc make such a big deal (which ultimately is for all the right reasons) about cross contamination etc.. that there are certain things they wouldn't let you eat... i've not really had this issue on disney ships. they are very thorough, but i've not had anyone at my table denied shellfish for example - even had them bring my "serving" of shellfish separately for another family member to enjoy. anyways, happy cruising :)

We haven't had that experience - DS is allergic to dairy (he has to ingest it for a reaction) and there has always been butter on our table on Disney cruises and we have ordered food with dairy for the rest of us (which is a bit of a treat since we don't eat dairy at home except for real cheese and occasionally real ice cream which we keep separate from his stuff)

For context: I have anaphylaxis allergies to milk, seafood (all fish, all shellfish, etc), peanuts and tree nuts. The seafood allergy is not just ingestion, but also airborne. The peanut allergy has in the past been airborne when I was exposed to a massive amount of crushed peanut & peanut shells and their dust, so the potential is there for an airborne reaction to (enough) heated peanut but so far I have not experienced that (OTOH I really don't go to places that would serve that anyway).

For our cruises (we only cruise Disney) no seafood is allowed at our table (which is easy because it is just my sister and I). In addition, we specifically ask for our own table because of the allergy -- IMO it would not be fair to prospective tablemates to prohibit them from having seafood too, but it would be necessary for my safety. Easy solution is our own table and on our two cruises so far that has not been a problem to get. Also, DCL has been good about situating our tables kind of out of the way and in decent ventilation. Before our first cruise we had an extensive conversation with DCL special services about accommodating the seafood allergy, especially in the MDR -- they were really helpful, understood the issues, and had great suggestions.

My sister is free to order as much milk, peanuts and tree nuts as she wants :-) We have never had an issue with being able to do that. For bread we choose to just have bread that is safe for me (on our last cruise on the Fantasy they had this most wonderful sourdough rolls that we could not get enough of!!) -- I got a dish with safe earth balance margarine in it, and my sister got her own dish with butter. She gets ice cream for dessert while I get the chef-being-creative safe dessert.

I HAVE reacted to airborne seafood in an MDR and would prefer to avoid that occurrence again.

Finally, for me pre-ordering the next night's dinner each night works really really well. On our next cruise I think we will also pre-order MDR breakfast and lunch, which will make those meals easier too. It means spending a bit longer in the MDR, but we are always late dining so that is not a big deal. Also, it has meant I was able to get some things not on the menu -- e.g. one night there was a great butternut squash soup. For dinner two nights later I asked if it was possible to get that again and they were able to make it for me :-) Also one night french onion soup was on the menu and they made me safe french onion soup -- something I have not been able to have for a very long time. I find it gives me more menu flexibility because with the ~24 hours notice they are able to make more things (e.g. if something needs to marinade they have time to make a safe marinade).
