OK here is my question my husband and I own 300 points at DVC and are very happy with our purchase. My mom owns a timeshare in Aruba that she is no longer able to travel to and she would very much like to get rid of she loves traveling with us to all the DVC properties we have been to and would like to buy into DVC herself will DVC help her sell or trade her Aruba property to buy into DVC? Thanks all for your help ;)

They will aboslutely help her buy in to DVC but as for selling her other one, no.

While The Timeshare Store specializes in DVC, I think they may deal with others. They would be my first call. Otherwise maybe RedWeek or TUG?

If her timeshare is in the RCI group she may be able to use it to trade into DVC resorts if she finds she cannot get much for it as a resale.

Minniegirl33 is correct. The Timeshare Store, Inc.® does specialize in DVC and we do list other Orlando resorts. We will be happy to refer you to another broker that can help with the Aruba property. Give us a call.

Is her other timeshare paid off? She could try to sell it through her current timeshare company or at least rent the points until she finds a buyer.

DH said that if we could sell our current timeshare then we could buy into DVC. I told him to pay off our current one since we are more than able but he's hoping to find a buyer that wants the "mortgage" on our timeshare  Oh well, at least I'll try to get one vacay out of the other one while doing more research on DVC.

I would look for reputable resellers on TUG, or you could also call TTS and get a referral.

It depends on what you are selling, but many timeshares don't have a whole lot of residual value. You can buy a lot of them for <$1,000 including closing costs on eBay.

The resort and season are very important. It may be worth as little as $1 or as much as thousands depending on the given week and resort in question. I'd second TUG as a means of gathering info and possibly to sell as well. If there is a mortgage, there's a good chance it's worth less than owed. If it's week 51-16 it will have value, otherwise it depends on the resort in question. Other than the AI mandatory resort, you may want to consider using it for trading options. If by chance there's a special assessment, it would be inappropriate and likely illegal to fail to disclose that.

I would simply locate a broker OR maybe even just list the timeshare she is trying to sell on EBay. Then purchase the points she wants either resale or direct from Disney.

In my opinion you need to find a resale company that specializes in the sale of that Aruba property. I would do a google search pretending you are a buyer trying to buy that resort. If you are able to find a company that specializes in that resort and DOESN'T charge an upfront fee I would list with them.

The Timeshare Store, Inc.® does specialize in DVC but as Robert mentioned if you contacted us at sales@dvcstore.com we could send you a list of brokers that might be able to assist you.

This is very important advice for anyone selling a timeshare. There have been many scams where sellers have paid hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of dollars in advanced fees and received absolutely nothing in return.

Advanced fee scams are very common in real estate and loan brokering operations (and also recently in credit/foreclosure/bankruptacy assistance). By the time the victims realize they have been defrauded, the bad guys have closed their office and are gone.

This does remind me of a common scam that's esp rampant in MX. Basically you buy a timeshare and the company either agrees to help you sell or actually "takes the current timeshare in" as a credit on the new one. Later you find out they really won't help you sell or that you now own both timeshares and are obligated to all fees for both.

Yes, upfront fee's are a dead giveaway for a scam. Reputable operators would never charge an upfront fee.

I am glad that I read this thread. I have several friends trying to get rid of their timeshares (other than DVC) and this is good advice that I will pass along.

I'd direct them to the Timeshare Users Group at www.tug2.net.
