We will be staying at WL this summer for the first time. One of the things we plan to do is go to Fort Wilderness for lunch at Trails End. How long is the walk? Is it too long that we should just take the ferry? Maybe only walk back? Any help and info is greatly appreciated.

If I remember right it's about a mile, which in the heat of summer may feel longer. But it is all wooded, in fact we took a surrey bike through and saw a deer and an armadillo. The kids really liked that. You could always walk over and if it was too much take the boat back.

If you're planning on going over for the campfire/movie, definitely plan on the boat because I don't think the path is lit.

Have fun!

I agree with Melk...it's a bit of a hike (1 mile sounds about right) and if you're going for lunch it will be in the heat of the day. It's a nice walk but with your little one it might not be quite as much fun.

The boat is an easy way to get there and Bay Lake is scenic. I'd probably go for that option, but as Melk says the path is paved and mostly shaded so it's not too bad.

With all the walking you'll be doing in the parks, I'd go the boat route. :)

Our family would not like the walk in the summer. However, it is a nice bike ride. We'll be at VWL at the end of June.

Thanks for the info, I will share with the family. Thanks again.

I tried to find it from the Fort Wildernesss end last time and couldn't. Going again next week.

If you are standing at the bus stop facing the buses, turn left, kind of downhill and a paved path will be on your left. If you're at the place where they rent bikes there's a sandy trail to the right of that building that also goes to FW, I've never taken that trail though.

ETA: Sorry Surfer Ed, just read your post again and realized you would be entering at FW. If I remember right it's over by the horse stables.

I agree the area is mostly shaded as it is hevily treed. We walked back from HDDR in Dec, there was a full moon and the trail was beautifully lit by that. We also so saw several deer on our bikes.

Yep. :thumbsup2

And though we call it a trail, it's really a paved asphalt path.

Granny, this made me chuckle. I'm picturing a sign pointing to the "Paved Asphalt Path" to Fort Wilderness and no one going down it. But slap anything "wilderness" on it and we're hooked!!! (What can I say, I'm a sucker for VWL!!!):lmao:
