We are going mid-June and I am trying to decide whether to do this tour. My daughter is 11 and LOVES animals. I am a little concerned about the bridge. Can anyone tell me how scary it really is? Does it sway a lot? I've watched videos but can't tell. I would hate to book it and then freak out while crossing. Any advice is appreciated!:scared:

I am afraid of heights and was able to cross ok. Sadly I didn't look down at the crocks or gaters under it lol. I was focused on getting across. It didn't away much if any that I remember. Maybe bounced a bit with my step. I am pretty sure we did it one person at a time. The trek is so much fun and worth every penny. I say do it! Also they probably have a way to let you skip the bridge and continue on if necessary although I am not positive of this.

I did the Trek 3,5 years ago. It's a little high, but you are very well secured and the bridge doesn't sway. Just moves a bit because you are walking on it. And if I remember correctly, it was indeed one person at a time. Besides that, you are not supposed to stand still (for too long). One of the guides goes first, the second goes last. Keep your eyes on the guide at the end and keep walking. It's only a minute.

Back then there was no other way then to cross the bridge to get to the other side. No chicken exits. They did have a little practice bridge before you leave.

My DS and DDIL are planning to go on this Trek. I am so excited for them!

I did this the first yr it opened. The bridge is the scarier part of the trek but not terrifying. The above PPs described it well. I did look down about half way across and the crocs "looked" like they were sleeping underneath me. LOL. I remember either the guide or the photo pass CM did have each of us stop briefly about 3/4s of the way over the bridge for a photo. But I agree with the PPs. If you are nervous, keep your eyes on the guide. I did, however, have to look down at my feet as I made my way across so that's a bit trickier than it sounds. Overall, a great experience. When I went, we got close to a hippo noshing on big watermelons. Hope that's still part of the trek!

I am afraid of everything involved with that bridge crossing (heights, bridges, water, crocodiles), but did the Wild Africa Trek and would do it again. You are harnessed in and the guides are very safety-conscious. They take your picture in the middle of the bridge crossing and again toward the end. My first picture is pathetic; I was frightened and put a big, fake smile on my face. The picture at the end of the bridge was much better because I had conquered my fear and made it! There was more than one person on the bridge at a time, but we were spaced so one person wasn't right next to another. I don't recall the bridge swaying, but it did move. As I was crossing the bridge, I just had to keep telling myself that despite my fears that if it wasn't safe Disney wouldn't be doing this. I still can't help but smile when I see that second picture when I was standing on the bridge with the crocodiles beneath me. I know this doesn't sound like a big deal to someone who doesn't have the same fears, but it was for me!

This is a great explanation of the bridge. As BalooFan says, "If it weren't safe, Disney wouldn't be doing this." The bridge is safe and secure, and there is no danger of falling. One additional note: Disney being Disney, the bridge includes artfully "broken" or "missing" slats, so because of temporary mobility issues I kept my eyes focused on the slats and made sure that I didn't miss a step. Even if I had missed a step, I wouldn't have fallen; I just wanted to make sure that I didn't twist an ankle or knee.

You will love Wild Africa Trek, and, trust me, you won't be the only person in your tour group who is a little anxious about the bridge crossing. The guides know this and are very helpful and reassuring.

Thank you so much for all of your answers. I feel a little better now. I'm going to try to book it for my daughter and myself. Maybe I can even convince my sister to tag along. Now I'm getting excited again lol I knew I'd get the help I needed on the disboards!:yay:

Our DD was 12 when we did the Trek. She's normally petrified of heights. When watching UTube, the bridges were the only thing she was nervous about. But, she was so excited about everything else; she was willing to try. She reminded me 3 times of our plan to have the rest of the group go first, then her sandwiched in between DH and I at the very end...When we got to the bridges, (without warning me of her last minute decision) she was the FIRST to raise her hand and volunteer. AND, still wanted DH and I to go last! Since by the time you get there you've already been harnessed to view the hippos, knowing she'd be harnessed made her feel safe. It was wonderful for her to feel more adventurous in a non threatening way. Since it takes a bit, and everyone else was in between us; I was anxious to find her feeling akward having waited that long on the other side without us. She didn't even notice when I walked up. :confused3 She was having too much fun talking to one of the guides and an older teenage girl. Besides all 3 of us absolutely loving the tour in general, it was worth every penny simply seeing her come out of her shell, experience some independence, and feel proud of herself. Your DD will love it!

It's as scary as your mind allows it to be. The bridge is completely safe (obviously...they're not letting people go across a questionable bridge), you are harnessed to a rope and fully safe. We did the tour a few years back and I could not recommend it highly enough. Great tour!!

My 10 year old is doing it next time. We thought she would be scared and not want to do it but we talked to her about the safety and showed her pictures of when we did it last year. Now she is excited as she loves animals.

Thanks for all your great responses. I'm booking it. Any tour time advice? Early morning or later, do you see more animals depending on the time?

Honestly, as someone who is a bit more adventurous, I'm a little disappointed by just how 'safe' and 'tame' the bridge is. Not only are you harnessed in above, but there is a net below you in case that support fails (which doesn't appear to be connected to the bridge's supports, meaning if the bridge somehow broke [and it won't break] then the net will still be in place). They've taken the fun out of crossing an alligator pit on a rickety bridge!

But seriously, you'll be fine :)

With the summer heat the animals we be more active in the morning. The tours after 11:00 are $50 cheaper. I booked the 8:45 tour this morning for our trip the end of May. The 8:00 tour was already full. The first thing she asked was did I want a tour before or after 11:00. It will also be a lot hotter in the afternoon.

I'm somewhat afraid of heights, yet didn't find it scary. My son was 9 and unafraid.

We did this Oct 2014 when DD was 8 and DS was 9. We all loved it!! None of us found the bridge scary at all. It is very secure, you're in a harness, and it's DISNEY! :) That said, none of us has a fear of heights or the like.
