Hello All,
First of all, I would like to start out by saying that I dont exercise, but am (just) in a healthy BMI range at 137 pounds and 53. I also dont do any crazy amount of dieting, but do generally watch my caloric intake (if its not a weekend). I bought the Wii Fit because for the past 3 months I have been gaining weight steadily (in January I was 133 pounds). While four pounds is not an incredible gain, its not a pattern I wish to continue. Also, I want to be start drilling in a healthy lifestyle for both my husband and I.
The Wii Fit came in the mail last week. The game includes a balance board which is what measures all of your activity. Upon starting the game you step onto the balance board and perform a fitness test. During this test you are asked for your height and age, and the balance board measures your weight and balance (you are asked to perform several activities to measure your overall posture and control). You are then asked to enter a fitness goal. For me the machine suggested the goal of a 22 BMI (down from my 24), which apparently is the ideal number (a weight loss of 12 pounds). I feel this goal is a bit ambitious as I havent weighed 125 pounds since I was in middle school; however Ive always been an advocate of shooting high.
After your fitness test the activities begin. There are four categories yoga, strength training, aerobics, and balance games. Ive made a routine of doing one of each, and then repeating. During yoga you can select a variety of positions and the balance board measures your steadiness and gives you a score for the position. Strength training is similar where you can do push ups (your arms on the balance board to give you your score), lunges, etc. Aerobics consist of running in place, step routines, & hula hoop (very fun). Balance board games are typically the most fun of all where you are asked to be steady and in control of several postures for games like skiing, heading soccer balls, etc.
Since having gotten the machine last Friday, I exercised Friday, Saturday, and last night (Wednesday). I would have exercised more had I not been away this weekend (where I crammed way too much food down my mouth, canceling out any progress I had made). I have intentions to use this machine 5 times a week, for a half hour each time. Because it is a game and not the treadmill I dont dread working out- I actually look forward to it. Also, because I am weighing myself each day, I am more inclined to eat less. I can honestly say I believe that this machine can easily be adapted to anyones lifestyle because its fun and its in your own home. Yes, youre a bit sore the day after, but you do get a pretty good workout (I sweat), and certainly better then no work out at all.
Stay tuned for progress!
