How does the onboard wifi work? Can you spread it out in blocks, or is it pay per usse? I just want to get my iPad online every few days to check email and voicemail. I don't to pay $50 EACH time

You can pay per minute you use or you can buy a block of minutes for use throughout the cruise. It is not cheap, and the connection is notoriously slow. If you only need every few days you may want to look into how to access free wifi in port.

I guess I'm wondering how they manage the blocks of time. I don't mind the fee as long as I get to use it all, when and how I need it. I guess maybe the log MAC addresses etc??

I may pick up sim cards as we go if it is reasonable. I have an unlocked iPhone but haven't found any decent info sobfar

I have to log in every day for work so I buy a block of time at the beginning of the cruise and add if I need to.

They track your usage by your cabin's specific account, which you log into every time you need internet access.

If you buy a package (block), you still use it by the minute. Of course, you lose any unused time at the end of the cruise. It starts at 75 cents per minute and goes down based on package size. Service is very S.....L.....O......W. There is free or cheap internet in most ports, if you can get by with only a few "check ins."

Just keep in mind that the connection is painfully slow and you are paying for the minutes that it takes just to connect to the website you need to look at. I agree that using wifi in port would be a more cost effective use. I was stunned how quickly I burned through minutes when the actual time I was actively engaged seemed so small.
