HI ALL!
I have a 3 year old RCA 27"TV and would appreciate some help understanding which DVD to buy WIDE screen DVDs or FULL screen DVDs.
Seabiscuit doesn't have two disc just one or the other.
THANKS!

Personally, I would stick with the widescreen. They have to lop off so much of the film to get it to fit on a standard TV screen. You do have the black bands on the top and bottom of the screen, but I never notice them after the first minute or so. We have an old 25 inch TV and always choose the widescreen option when it's available. Just my opinion.

I can watch either with no problems. My mother, however, is driven almost to the point of pulling out her hair, if she has to watch widescreen. :yo-yo: :teeth:
Yep, the widescreen has the black bands on the top and bottom of the screen. Some people can only focus on the bands. ::yes::

I get this question a lot when im going over advance product questions at work..

If your buying the dvd's I personaly would choose wide screen. This is the direction the entire industry is going to since all your tv's within the next 2 yrs are going to be hd compatible and flat screen ( this doesnt mean flat panel).

Basicly its going to get to were your normal programs on tv will be wide screen also even some hd news stations are already taking advantage of this feature by putting extra info on the right and left sides of the standard picture.

So in the long run buying the dvd as wide screen, will make it fit future tv's, and not make you crave to buy it again in a different format.

But, if your just renting for a qwick trip, do what looks better on your current tv.

I currently work at a tv station ... and we all vote for the widescreen; you see the film as it was intended to be seen.

:)

Definitely wide screen. My DH has convinced me that it is the only way to watch a DVD. Some DVDs will show you an example of wide screen and full screen. It is amazing how much of the movie is cut off on a full screen.

Another vote for widescreen. Most people don't realize how much of the picture is cut off the other way. I've seen numerous movies on tv where one character was speaking to another, but only one of them was visible. I know that in the thater, I was able to see them both. On the widescreen DVD, you get to see the movie the way it was filmed and the way it looked in the theater.

Wow, I'm sure in the minority, but those black bands on the top and bottom of the picture drive me nuts!! We use our old VCR a lot more than the new DVD player, just for that reason. If I do rent a DVD, I make sure it's full screen. I've never noticed what's NOT there.

well, when i rent or watch a movie i turn down the lights to keep the glare off the screen, and with a black tv i dont see the bands.. so it is nice to have the entire movie available....

HI ALL!

ENJOYING YOUR RESPONSES!

Can you eliminate the bands by zooming the picture with your DVD "x" zoom button ?
We rented "Sweet Home Alabama" and I found myself zooming the bands out with "x " button.

ENJOY!!!

Widescreen again. When you start watching the movie, especially with the lights of, you don't notice the black at the top or bottom anyway and you see the entire movie.

My hubby buys the widescreen, with the hope that Santa will leave a big screen, wide screen tv under the tree. Alas, Mickey is under there this year!

HI ALL! 12/18/04
Went to BJ's today, "Freeky Friday!" $17.99 - $3.00 instant rebate for the DVD.
Costco wanted $13.99 for the VHS Tape version.

ENJOY!

Widescreen all the way for me.

If a DVD is only available in "full screen" (such as the Canadian version of Freaky Friday), then I'll refuse to watch it.

What's the point in watching only part of the movie and pay full price of it?

While watching widescreen presentation and you "see" the black bars, that means your brightness and contrast settings of the TV are set too high.

Rule of thumb:

Sharpness: about 25%
Contrast: about 40%
Brightness: about 40%
Colour: about 50%
Tint: about 50%
Colour temperature (is available): warm (or on some TV: Movie)

The above setting will make your TV's settings closer to the Industry standard of D6500K colour temperature.
