The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L is the best, not a BUDGET lens though..

It's definitely a nice lens, but not too wide on a 20D either. That's the equivalent of a 38mm lens on a film camera. If you are going to blow the budget, you can't beat the Nikon 14-24 and a converter. I like Canon's long lenses better than Nikons (though I haven't seen any of the new Nikon supertelephotos), but they definitely beat Canon on the wide end.

There is nothing wrong with Canon's EF-S 10-22. But like was mentioned before, it won't work on a full frame camera. However, that will never be a problem for the majority of canon's non-pro customers.

If you are on more of a budget, a cheaper route would be sigmas 10-20 but that is still around $425. Its not as fast but many people say its just as good.

Canon's 10-22 is a very sharp lens but not really a budget item. The Sigma is less $$$ but I prefer to stay with Canon and bought the 10-22. Highly recommended for a wide angle solution!

I am really impressed with the Sigma 10-20mm on my 30D. I took it on a cruise recently and was really impressed with the quality of the shots I got with it. It isn't very fast, but it is quite sharp.

Here are a couple shots with it. Yes, I also went to WDW for a couple days after the cruise just to stay away from the cold weather here for a little while longer....

The Tokina 11-16 is one I have been considering for a while. It is relatively fast at 2.8. It sits around $600.

I'll throw in my endorsement for the Canon 10-22 EF-S lens. I have one, and really like it. Very crisp images with rapid USM focusing.

When I use a wide angle prime on my Contax DSLR, I only shoot at f/8 or higher. So I can't post my photos here. But lucky for me, someone will start a specific thread just for that pretty soon.

I don't see what's so funny - I actually have a tab open in Firefox right now from looking at eBay listings of Contax/Yashica-mount lenses, which apparently can often be modified to M42-mount (same registration distance.) I've been thinking about tackling an M42 adaptation and was looking for a cheap donor.
