Why would they be working on Splash Mtn so early in Jan

I thought they were doing a refurb of Space Mt. after the first of the year? Surely they won't be doing refurbs on big rides at the same time in the same park?

I would think since Jan is the coldes month in WDW, this would be the best time to do a Splash refurb since not as many people are willing to get wet and be cold. :confused3

BTW, here in AL, kids go back to school right after New Years... :)

The Disney site says it will be closed for refurbishment Jan 2. Isn't this still a busy time? I thought that they closed major rides after the crowds. Didn't they do work on Splash Mtn just last year? :sad1: :worried:

It's cold in January, which makes people want to not ride it. I walked onto SM every day I was there last December.

Sure as I can be ... Our schools went back January 10th the past two years, and will go back January 9 next year. Also there were TONS of foreign (mainly British) tourists there that week as well.

Yep, British kids usually have that extra week after New Year's as vacation from school. Lucky things. Though they have a really short summer vacation, compared to US.

We were there last year Jan.2-7. I remember the crowds being very low. It was our first time going in Jan. and I remember walking on several rides with no wait. In fact, the longest wait we had was on Dumbo-20 min.

We were there then too, and I could not believe how crowded it was the whole week. I expect the same for next year also, since New Years Day falls on a Monday, and most schools in the southeast have Christmas break til the second week of January.

We were there the first week of January 2005 and also thought the crowds were quite large - long waits, fast passes gone, especially in MK - so I'll never again believe that it's dead the first week of January. As you say, how New Year's Day falls in the week surely has an impact.

It's kind of funny - if we had known ahead of time, I think we wouldn't have had any problem dealing with it. But because of the reputation for empty parks that time of year it took a while to make the mental adjustment. This year we're be arriving Feb. 3rd. We're making plans as if the place will be crowded and then hope we'll be thrilled to find it half-empty. :goodvibes

I agree with you that I wish we knew ahead of time. We were always told after Jan 2 you can walk on anything. We were surprised and disaapointed to find crowds, fast passes out early and long lines. We adjusted of course, but would have been nice to be ready for that instead of disappointed. We are going back this year same time. Let's just say we will be pleasantly surprised if it isn't super crowded :)
