It is 3 hours off.

I did discover the battery died this a.m.--the plug was disconnected from the wall and I think I had left it off.

But it changes frequently--no "invasion" of my laptop has been detected.

There is something called a CMOS batter inside your laptop that keep the clock running when the laptop is off. If you laptop is at least a few years old and is frequently losing time when powered off, the CMOS batter probably needs replacing.

You may still have a bad battery - they can come from the factory with bad parts (trust me on this!). Have you called tech support since this is a new laptop?

They will likely have you reset the time in the BIOS and then test the clock - but you should not go into the BIOS without knowing what you are doing, you could cause irreversable harm.

Check the time zone setting to be sure it's correct. :)

(Double click on the time, then look for the Time Zone tab.)

if you right click and go to adjust date/time then go to the internet time, uncheck the box that automatically synchronizes with the internet time server.

I've found that the internet time server isn't always right. We had this problem with DH's computer and his pc clock was always off by minutes or hours at one point. After unchecking the box, no more weird times.
