Why would a manufacturer do this?

I was out of town last weekend and realized I forgot to bring my saline solution. There was a Kroger about 1/2 a mile away, so I went there. I wanted to pick up a travel size since I have some plane trips coming up in April.

The smallest bottle Bausch & Lomb (I've tried generic brands but they made my eyes burn) offered was a 4oz. Why? They know you can't take more than 3.4oz on a plane, why not make the travel size 3.4oz? Yes, I know you can "declare" it as medical, but why go through the hassle?

They do make a travel size I buy it all the time l usually get it at target. There is also a website that sells all travel supplies and they have them as well minimum.biz

Not all travel is done by air. So it all travel sizes are *for* air travel.

Using the "can I bring?" part of the tsa app I get the answer for medically necessary items when I search for contact lens solution.

http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?search=large contact lens solution (more than 3.4oz)

When I do a search for "carbonated drinks" I get a different answer. http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?search=carbonated drinks

Even medically needed liquids have to be in reasonable quantities so 4oz is better than the giant bottles.

There's no hassle in putting the contact lens in its own baggie and writing medical on it and pointing that out to the agent.

Or find the 2oz bottles. Maybe ask at Kroger if they have them elsewhere.

Thanks. I was in an unfamiliar town, it was at night and I was ready to go to bed.

I get that. If they would have had a 5 or 6 oz bottle, I would have felt different. But really? Adding .6oz? Just seems strange to me.

That is because the Bausch is a2oz travel size

Ah. I didn't see a 2oz either, maybe they were just out.

You can bring a full-sized bottle of contact lens solution on a plane because it's considered a medical necessity (or whatever the TSA terminology is). I never bother with travel-sized containers because they are overpriced. I always get pulled out of the security line for them to test it, but it only takes an extra minute or two. Just take it out of your carry on with your quart bag of other toiletries when it goes through the x-ray machine to make it easier.

Keep in mind that every retail store doesn't sell every available size/variety of a product. There may be many multiple sizes of that contact lens solution that are available that Krogery doesn't sell, but maybe Walmart or Rite Aid does.

I've wondered the same thing. I realize that some folks travel and don't fly but still, seems silly to make 2 sizes. Seems like making a 3.4 oz would suit all. But what do I know.

The 4 oz "travel size" was dictated long before 9-11 and the then-new liquids restrictions. Many pharmaceutical companies offer 4oz as their smallest size. You would think that by now, someone would have got the message that they would see more if they reduced the bottle to 100ml (3.4 oz).
