Why weren't these buses deployed Mr. Mayor?

B/c he is the mayor of New Orleans.

Orleans Parish does not have school busses. Children ride the city bus (at least way back when I was in school). The city busses were used to take people to the Superdome--10,000--only 10% of the 100,000 estimate given of those stranded in New Orleans.

(btw the picture is not there--but I did want to see it).

Check Drudge. In a state of emergency such as this, there is no reason why there should have been any idle transportation ANYWHERE in La. The governor should have deployed the buses. In Ct. when we have had snowstorms, the governor didn't wait for the mayor to close businesses, he requested that businesses be closed. The same could have happened with the school buses.

He cannot deploy anything he doesn't own.

You should be questioning Miss Governor--not Mr. Mayor.

And it still bears the question....how do you efficiently move 100,000 people out?

I'm confused...do you mean the evacuation before the storm hit, or the one underway now?

If it's the former, ITA.

If it's even possible for them to have gotten those busses, where would they have taken them Dawn? To higher ground to ride out the storm in the open?

There wasn't enough room within the city to house everyone in shelters.

And given that it's taken the federal government 5 days to even begin to get aid into the area, you can hardly expect that the state or local government had time to set up shelters further up state or out of state.

I really don't like attacking our leaders and I would have defended the mayor had he not said the things he did today. Bush is taking a lot of flack because both the mayor and the governor failed the people, imo, and now the mayor wants to point the finger. Well guess what? He's got more fingers pointing right back at himself.

EDIT: This is simply my opinion only!

And who would have driven those buses? Many drivers likely were already evacuating with their families.

It doesn't matter---he cannot utilize what is not his--and DawnCt's beef is with the wrong person.

The mandatory evacuation before the storm hit. The mayor could have requested the use of those buses, no matter who they belonged to. Unfortunately they are totally useless now.

I heard someone in and around the French Quarter area paid $25,000 out of their own pocket to bring buses in and those buses were confiscated and sent to the dome. I can't verify that's it true, but it was reported on Fox.

This was after the fact however.

What civics class did you take? He can request--he can't order. They are not in his jurisdiction.

The city doesn't have school busses!!!

Right---but they were comandeered in city limits.

I would guess that if he conferred with the governor, as should have been done once a mandatory evacuation was ordered, she could have managed somehow to "borrow" the busses. It isn't that complicated. There are buses, there are people who should have left. Borrow the buses, drive them out.

I think if a request was put in for them that mostly everyone who'd have been asked would have went out of their way to help.

Like I said, I don't like pointing fingers, but it angers me to no end that the mayor has done exactly that.

I'm sure there's going to be blame for all levels of government when all is said and done. There definitely should have been an evac plan in place for the poor of New Orleans.

I'd like to know exactly why a lot of people didn't have an option of leaving that was supported by the local or state government. But I don't think you can pin blame regarding those drowned and unused school buses on the mayor of New Orleans.
