Why this trip was so extra-magical for us

Hi there! We just returned from our 3rd Disney trip within a year, and I was determined to make this one unique/extra special. Kids (DD12 and DS8) said this trip was the best so far--maybe because of these:
1. I finally learned to relax. We slept in, we changed my (carefully made) itinerary at the last minute, we did what we felt like doing. Kids really liked that I wasn't going Disney Commando this time, and I really liked handing over the decisions to them.
2. We did the Family Magic Tour. We all enjoyed it immensely--excellent tour guide, fun interaction with the other families, made spectacles of ourselves and loved it.
3. We did VMK quests (available at the Main Street Cinema in Magic Kingdom.) Kids play VMK religiously and asked if we might stop in the Cinema to pick up some quests. DH and I reluctantly agreed--VMK in the REAL MK? But then DH and I got totally sucked into the quests--we had a blast going around the parks finding the answers. We all saw things in the parks we'd never noticed before because of the quests. And kids got lots of freebies for VMK, for which they are eternally grateful.
4. We tried a lot of new restaurants this time. Last year we mostly returned to old favorites, which was fine, but some of which we were kinda disappointed by the repeat trip. However, this time I was determined to seek out some new spots. And we pretty much loved them all.
5. Tour Guide Mike for Animal Kingdom. His touring suggestions got us on Expedition Everest (a most excellent attraction!) three times in a row before crowds built. We rode it 8 times this trip.
6. LaNouba. In the past I never wanted to take away from park time to do anything else (see #1), but this time we had some non-park days (we were there 13 days but only had a 10-day pass) so I decided we'd try it. We loved it. Those non-park days were wonderful for really relaxing and feeling like we were on vacation, BTW.
7. Bob Jackson at POR. We sat and watched his show at the River Roost. Enjoyed a few drinks. Laughed with our kids. At one point my DD12, who had been playing at the arcade at POR, returned to my table and looked around and asked, "What, has everyone had too much to drink here?" And I said, "No, honey, this is Disney. We're all just having a really good time!" Oh, and while we were at POR, we rented a surrey bike. What a blast! (Granted, those hills gave us some moments of strain...)
Hope these ideas might inspire others who are looking for some extra Pixie dust moments... :sunny:

That's awesome! Glad you had such a magical time. I hope to find some of that warm-fuzzy-feeling on our upcoming trip. Thanks for sharing!

Ditto on the surrey bikes!!! :rotfl2:

Getting out of "commando" mode has really helped me enjoy Disney more too. I joined DVC this year, so I know I'll be back, and if the line is too long or it's too hot-I move on to something else. I've learned to enjoy the resorts too, before it was just a place to sleep-now it's an important part of my visit. Disney really makes the resorts beautiful and I never slowed down enough before to notice! The rooms are beautifully furnished, and the grounds are lovely.
I've learned to linger over meals, stop and sit in the shade and watch the passing parade. (the people, not the Disney parade) My "kid" is now 20 and in college, so I love watching other people's little ones react to the characters and the rides, it brings back wonderful memories.

Thanks for this post! We had a less magical trip last week, for lots of reasons, but it's the potential for magic that keeps us coming back. Also, DVC makes it easier not to do the commando thing, which DH appreciates. Have fun planning (or not planning ;) ) the next trip!

3 times in one year?!? Wow, I am lucky to get my wife (& bank acct) to agree to come once a year...And she loves Disney. :rotfl2:

Seriously, We used to go for only 3-4 nights and did everything commando. But, then I convinced my wife to do a 6-7 night trip. She was worried it would be 7 days of commando. But, it wasn't it was much more relaxing and now we only go for 6-7 nights.

I'm glad you had a good trip....we're also going to be less "commando" style this trip. We're taking my Mom for her 1st trip to the world so I've already told my girls (ages 9 & 11) that we may have to go at a bit slower pace because we don't want to wear Grandmom out. We're not goint to stress if we can't do a certain ride, etc...we'll just go with the flow. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for this post. Last year we were so busy trying to fit in all our ADR's on the FREE dining plan that we often forgot to relax and enjoy our trip. I'm trying to avoid it this Sept. but I already feel the stress of trying to fit in all those sit downs. Also, we were always getting up early to make the park openings - my poor 7 yr old was tired a lot of the time. This year I'm determined to relax more. Here are some of my plans:

Relax at the resort the first night (last year we rushed to Illuminations and endured major melt-downs from both kids)

No character breakfasts before 8:30 - no matter the temptation to be in the park an hour before opening (last year the kids were like zombies in the Cinderella breakfast)

Plan at least 2 rest days at the resort (our one day of this was our favorite day last year)

I will not freak out if we decide to skip a dinner ADR

I will not hurry the kids away from something small - when watching the video I realized that these little treats were the best parts of our trip

We will sleep in at least some of the time.

I think that's all - I'm still working on these plans - I think our vacation depends on them!

Hi Skater--
You've hit it exactly. I finally learned to go at my kids' pace--and we all enjoyed ourselves as a result. One of my favorite memories is plopping down on the curb on Main Street watching the crowds while the kids played VMK in the Cinema. I could have sat there all day, and the kids loved their VMK time. (Yes, I understand the irony of playing VMK while in RMK, but I also enjoyed that the kids could play their favorite game while being in their favorite place. I enjoyed, too, having people come up to me with questions--I wear a gold guest of honor badge and am often mistaken for a CM--although what CM has the luxury of sitting on the curb on Main Street?!:confused3 )
Disney will always be there for us to enjoy in years to come.
Have a magical trip! :sunny:

I think what worked for you worked for me. Take a day or two just to relax, plus your kids ages are great, no diapers, no bottles and no crying! I loved it, now my daughter will be 20 soon.

That's fantastic! :) I'm glad you had a great time. We are going on Sunday and can't wait. We took 2 days to do absolutely nothing and maintain the relaxed atmosphere. Especially since it's our last vacation of the summer. :guilty: We are also going to see La Nouba. Really looking forward to it. We do not do Tour Guide Mike, but if you don't mind me asking, how were you so successful with Expedition Everest? Did you utilize Fast Pass and consistently ride it when you first arrived in the morning?

I'm so glad you had a good time! DBF and I had a not so good trip in May so now he's taking me back to WDW for my birthday in December! I'm so excited! You have inspired me to try and convince him to go see La Nouba. I have always wanted to see it but we never seem to have time....this coming trip, we have 2 days scheduled at AK (which closes earlier than the other parks) plus the day we get we will get in early and plan to do DTD anyway so here's hoping!

Oh wow sounds like such a nice trip! Thank you for the VMK trip, my kids havent played it alot but the quests sound great as you notice more about the MK so I will mention it to the kids..

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I am so glad you enjoyed it. As for me. I am on the fence about La nouba. Was it really worth the money??

purpliequeen--We are huge believers in fastpass. Definitely use it for EE. :sunny:

faindrops--I wasn't ever sure about LaNouba, either, but I will say I am so glad I went, as are my kids. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I got tickets through either Ticketmania or Undercover tourist, so they were slightly discounted, which made them even more worth it to me! :sunny:
