Why The Meanness...Subtle or Not-So-Subtle

Okay - I'm not a community board regular but I come over here several times a week. Yes, I've been watching all the commotion going on here lately, but I have to ask - why the meanness?

I see the new threads waving the red flag saying, "Close us down"...like you are taunting the mods.

Granted - the mods aren't perfect...and neither am I.

Granted - I've only been a board member for about 2 years....and only recently have I ventured over here - so I may not know all the history and baggage.

Granted - I've seen proof and evidence of both sides. If I were a judge, I'd have a hard time deciding who to go with.

BUT COME ON...why is everyone being so mean. Why the taunting to the mods? When you title your thread ...how many posts till we get closed down...or we've offended people...don't ya think you're just asking for trouble? Or is that what all this has come to ...a bunch of ugliness?

I saw a post from a newbie earlier who said she would not be returning to the community boards b/c of what she was reading. That isn't what the disboards were all about.

Sure there are lots of games...sure there have been hijacking, but can't we all get above this. Wow. It is really sad.

Okay, thanks for letting me ask the question...I truly don't mean to be stirring the pot, but I just wish I could understand why people are being mean on purpose.

I think the boards, probably all of them, Karen, go through cycles. And right now the CB seems to be in one of them. With the CB as the busiest of the boards, and no topical guidelines, it opens it up to most anything. It will pass, but return too, LOL. Hang in there.

Hi Karen,

First,
WelcomeSparkle.gif
to the CB!

I have noticed some meanness too, and I was really shocked at some posts that were directed at the mods. I would be way too scared to ever talk back to the mods!

But I think if you stick around for a while, you will discover that most people here are really very nice. :thumbsup2

I am fairly new here and from what I understand there is a reason its called the Darkside. Actually its kind of one of those things where you just can't look away. I have read almost everything and I am still scratching my head. I do know that I am starting to form my own opinions with certain posters, but that is for ME to know. I just can't seem to tear myself away. I have been a member of other boards and this rift that is happening on the DIS is nothing new. The arguing comes and goes. This too shall pass...then come back...you get my drift.

Take it for what it is - an open forum to discuss multiple topics.

Sometimes (IMHO) people get out of control with their opinions/emotions. I try to avoid these topics and look for the less controversial threads.

And BTW "Mean people suck".

But isn't that kind of sad? That grown adults would be scared to express themselves freely?

I agree with Dan. The community board is cyclical and I have seen this "mean" cycle many many times. It will pass.
It's not the busiest board though, Theme parks passed it by a while ago.

Bbgrizzle- I'm not that scary... really.. especially after the judge said.. never mind :)

Stick around...it will pass. :)

Can I just say, in a very pleasant voice...
I have been involved in one of the aforementioned "mean" threads, and wow. We didn't realize we were being mean.
Some of us were hurt when a thread we frequented was closed after a few new people made some not so nice posts. Those comments were not at all in line with the tone of the thread. It had been running peacefully for a month with absolutely no complants. Moral of the story...we were disappointed.
Some of us made comments out of frustration that the mods shut us down. And "hahaha, when will we be shut down again?" We're poking fun at ourselves for being part of a thread that was closed--there is kind of a stigma attached to it, don't you think? --even though we were the innocent bystanders! And to some degree, poking fun at the mods for closing the thread instead of deleting the bad posts from an otherwise innocent thread.
And while I'm at it. Yes. We were all friends there. We still are. We converse. We have gotten to know one another and will continue to seek out one another. I will defend that to the end. Why is it wrong for us to have a meeting place here, in the community, to share our morning coffee and find out how things are going?

There's actually a good reason mods tend to lean towards locking threads instead of deleting posts. With this software each post has to be deleted individually and it can take forever if it's more than 1 or 2 posts. Add in people that quoted the bad post and now it really turns into a chore.

The next generation of this software will make that MUCH easier, click a check box next to the offending posts hit delete and adios problem. I fell it will make a real difference in how people moderate. We would much prefer for the posts to be removed.

By this do you mean in speed? From the main disboards, it appears the CB would be given the number of threads/posts compared to the theme parks board, but another WM said that as well so I'm curious as to how it's determined.

I totally understand. I will share with the others!!!!!
Excellent! :thumbsup2
I hope the mods aren't offended. We just felt like we had been sent to detention!

When the kids are back in school, everyone will be in a better mood.

In terms of number of visitors, we can track how many people view the board

I think the CB just entered the Twilight Zone this week. It will be back to normal soon.

A Presidential election year is always a verrrrrrry interesting time around here, too!
