No it's not a joke...this is one dish that WON"T be on my table Christmas Eve!!! Lutfisk!!
2 1/2 lb Lutfisk (dried cod)
1 cup slaked lime
2 qts oak or maple ashes

Saw fish into 3 parts, clean & place in wooden bowl. Add water to cover, set in cool place for 5-6 days. Change water daily. Remove fish & clean bowl. Make a solution of water, lime and ashes and allow to stand overnite. Drain off clear liquid and pour over soaked fish. set in cool place for 7 days. When fish is soft, remove from solution, scrub bowl well and soak fish for several days in cold water. Cook in boiling salted water at simmering temp for 2 minutes. drain and serve. Norwegians serve it with melted butter, Swedes serve it with white or mustard sauce.

I like to think that I would take a tiny taste of just about any traditional holiday food from cultures different from mine, I don't think I'll try that though. I tried some sort of cold herring in mustard at Akerhaus. It turned me off from tasting new fish dishes.

I wonder if they'd have Glogg at Akerhaus? Now I would like to try some Glogg! :p

Will post the Glogg recipe later:D

I don't think it's wise to drink Glogg at Akerhaus then ride the Maelstrom:eek:

LOL! Okay! If I ever get to Epcot at Christmas time and they serve Glogg at Akerhaus, I'll have to remember that. :p :p

I have had this at a Scandinavian banquet. The servers all came out with the jars of fish and they were wearing MASKS! It really smells.....

Ok. if people serving something have to wear masks since the smell is so bad, I ain't eating it!!!! :p

And LOL gravymom!!!!

I have to agree, waitstaff with face masks precludes me from sampling anything.

As if the smell alone would keep you from making this....having to use a saw to prepare it??!!

Gas masks?!?!?!?!?!?!?    I honestly have to say that I would not try it, for sure! And ............. if it's going to be served around me, I want a gas mask too! :p
