Why own at multiple resorts?

Hi everyone. Last week, my DVC representative told me that over 60% of members own at more than one resort. Why do you think members have multiple home resorts?

(1) Do people add contracts as new resorts are developed?

(2) Do people buy in thinking that they can stay anywhere only to find out that they are limited to their home resort and add on a more desired resort?

(3) Something else entirely?

I now have 2 Kidani Village contracts and am wondering if I am missing something.

I can speak for myself personally and say that we want to stay in BLT standard rooms and at BWV during Food and Wine festival. Both of these rooms will most likely be booked at the 7 month window. So that is why we decided to buy at both resorts, to have the 11 month booking window at each.

Each resort has something that makes it special. At AKV it's the concierge level and the value studios. At SSR it's the Treehouse Villas. At BWV and BCV it's Food and Wine Festival...etc etc. Owning at these resorts is the only real way to assure that you will be able to stay there, if that's what's important to you.

Quick question, have you considered buying resale? It's a great way to own two resorts for the price of one! :)

Same for us as well. We own 300 points at BLT, for our main family vacations, then I purchased 60 Boardwalk points specifically for a stay during the Food and Wine.

No, I did not buy resale because I wanted to have the option of using my points for the Disney Collection. I know it is not the best use of points, but I visit Disneyland often and want to be able to use my points at Disney's Paradise Pier and the Disneyland Hotel. Deluxe studios at the Grand Californian are never available.

I waited too long to become a DVC member. I regret not buying into the Grand Californian when it was available. Now, I am wondering if I should be saving for the Grand Floridian.

#1 Bought BLT new 3 years ago

#2 Added on at BLT and then bought resale at another desirable resort to get the 11 month window.

#3 Found that we were limited by our lack of points and wanted to go more often and stay longer.

I don't think you're missing anything if you are happy with your 2 AKV contracts, have ample points for your stays and are able to wait for your 7 month window to try to move if you want to.

We originally bought HH, though we never planned to stay there. Then we bought OKW resale, to make sure we could stay onsite. Then we decided we never needed to stay anywhere except BWV, so we sold our HH points and bought BWV points. Since then we've considered AKV because we enjoyed our concierge stay there.

we bought at VWL as soon as the points went on sale. Same with BCV. When they sold new points for OKW (after they tore down the Commorodore House and added Bldg 62. 63 and 64) we also bought more there (to add to our OKW points). We have since sold the extra OKW points (last OKW points we bought) and the BCV points.

This sums me up pretty well. Bought my first contract (150 points) at BWV because Food and Wine is my favorite Disney event. I'm now in ROFR on a BLT contract (80 points) because I love the Contemporary and the ease of walking to and from MK. Buying at BLT will allow me to have a shot at the standard view rooms.

When I bought I never thought of resale and took HH because they had the lowest dues of all new resorts at the time. Plus our guide said HH would be difficult to get in summer. Next we bought SSR because we wanted a WDW resort and it was the only new one for sale. Than I discovered resale and bought another SSR contract because of a combination of low dues and price.

We originally bought in at AKV, and eventually added on at SSR - specifically to be able to book THV at 11 months (and the incentive and price they were offering at the time was something we could not pass up)

We own at BLT and BWV because that is where we want to stay and in order to be able to book the rooms we want, we wanted the 11 month booking window for each.

Our summer trips are always a split stay because we love to be able to walk to the parks and being part time at BWV and the other time at BLT works well for us.

Another one for the 11 month advantage. We own at BLT and AKV but sentimentality was the main reason we purchased at our second resort. We love BLT and AKV. And it's really come in handy owning at our second resort because we can stretch our points in an AKV value resort. And then there the views from the savanna rooms. Wow!

I don't yet own 2 resorts, actually, waiting on closing on our first at BWV currently (100 pts), but I definitely want to buy at AKV as well. Stayed at BWV many times (renting) and absolutely love the point savings of standard view, and of course Food and Wine. But we recently spent a few night in AKV, and fell in love as well. Next contract will definitely be there, as I want access to the value rooms. See a trend here? Just might be in 3-5 years before we can do that one :). And maybe some BLT eventually for those standard rooms and walking access to MK...

Buying a two resorts makes sense if you know you want to stay in two specific places that have tight availability. Or even one specific place, and your other contract is for a less expensive resorts. You do need to understand that owning two resorts only gets you home resort advantage for those home resort points....i.e. if you own 50 BWV points to get a room at BWV over Food and Wine and 150 SSR points, at eleven months you can use those 50 BWV points - or 150 if you bank and borrow three years worth of BWV points - but none of those SSR points can be used to book that BWV room until seven months out.

Over the years, several newbies to DVC have misunderstood this and have tried to work the system by buying a lot of cheaper points, and a few expensive points - and it doesn't work that way.

Thank you for explaining! After reading the other posts, I was under that same impression as well.

I bought SSR and OKW for the low resale price. I have stayed at both and do like them. I also bought BWV because that is where I want to stay.

Even booking at the 11 month mark I couldn't get a standard view 1 bedroom at BWV for two weeks at spring break. One night was already gone.

True. We bought our second resort because we want/need to stay at BCV during Food&Wine (races), mainly because we have runners in the family and the guys like the location. Yeah, us and about a million other people. :lmao:

We need a 2 bedroom for this and to be able to go with the amount of points we have it means every other year. With the dates we want and the popularity of BCV there is no way we could add extra days at the 7 month mark. Hmmmm......I think I see more BCV points in our future.
