Why no sharks at Stingray feedings?

I saw the post about sharks and I have always wondered - why doesn't the food fed to stingrays attract sharks? Now I am getting paranoid about my kids swimming in the open ocean. I know shark bites are a rare occurence, but it seems it could happen to anybody. One more thing to add to my list of things to worry about!

I am not certain in the least, but I would guess becasue of the sheer number of people in one small place of the ocean.....at least in GC there are amny boats anchored at sting ray city and many mnay many bodies in the water

Actually the stingrays are located on a sandbar off Grand Cayman. Which is located VERY close to a reef, and after that there is a SEVERE dropoff. The sharks really don't come in past the reefs around GC, so there is no reason to worry. The depth of the waters around GC before the reefs, is no more than 20ft. At the reefs, the depth gets even lower, and the sandbar the depth is about 3 ft, so no worries about being in the open water. The water around GC is more like a lagoon because of the reefs protecting the beaches around it. One of the reasons GC has some of the best diving in the world.

There are sharks at Stingray City, just as there are anywhere in the ocean. The depth of the water doesn't matter (so long as there is enough room for them to swim), and a sandbar doesn't matter either. Just yesterday a boy surf fishing in Ft. Walton lost his leg in waist deep water. Fish eat fish, and sharks eat stingrays too (and any other fish you might see swimming there).

The diffence is, humans aren't usually on the menu. As much as you read about them in the news, shark attacks on humans are EXTREMELY rare. You are more at risk, by far, to die from the sunburn you get going to Stingray City!

SHark attacks are rare just as plane crashes are rare, but because of the severity of them...it usually scares most people to death. More people die on I-95 in a day. I am not criticizing..I used to be able to fly..now I won't. I probably would do stingray city..just because there are alot of people and the boats are all right there (hopefully with something to kill it with). It's not like you are out 100 yds with only 1-2 other people.

There are sharks around. Honestly, I cannot imagine a reef shark swimming into an area heavy populated with loud, bouncing bodies for piece of dead squid. There are much easier meals to be had elsewhere for them.

Actually a tour group of lawyers once visted the place and scared them all away! At least that's the legend I heard. :rotfl:
