Why no American table service?

so....

the demand for "baked prairie dog" just isn't there, huh?! :rotfl:

I've always assumed that there is no good restaurant at the American Pavilion because when Epcot opened in 1982(?) New American Cuisine had not come into its own yet. The whole California, Alice Waters, Chez Panisse-style of New American cooking was just barely coming on the scene at that time. Also, American wine production, while fairly well developed in California, still had a ways to go before being world class.

So, when Epcot opened, there was nothing very interesting about American cooking -- at least not interesting enough to merit a table service restaurant.

In the last 25 years New American Cuisine has come of age and American wines are respected around the world. I think it is time for WDW to open a restaurant in the American Pavilion to showcase those foods and wines.

But, WDW doesn't seem terribly interesting in any capital spending other than for new roller coasters, so I'm not holding my breath.

If anyone is there during F&W, you see exactly why a an American TS worth the peer restaurants of the world would not work. There are more varied food booths of the USA are there are in the rest of the world combined.

Seeing as how USA is a melting pot, an appropriate menu to satisfy all Americans would need to not only serve all the regional cuisines mentioned in prior posts but also parts of all the menus of the other countires in Epcot.

Would people really complain? How self centered would that be. I really wish they had a new orleans style restaurant there. That is probably up there for most famous regional cuisine in america outside of america. Disneyland has one. I can't picture people complaining, its never entered my head to bemoan parts of the Canadian pavilion for what it doesn't represent, which is almost everything given the historical slant of the american and the landscape slant of the canadian one. You'd have to pretty daft to think any pavillion at epcot was meant as an encompassing representation as opposed to a caricarture.

The closest thing to New Orleans cuisine is Boatwrights at POR. But if you want beignets for dessert, you'll need to go to POFQ.

Remember that some people are only happy when they are making other miserable. :confused3

I think Disney should add a restaurant. They could definatly do something for within that 1770's time period, with "Colonial" cooking. I don't know exactly what that would include, but they could do it.

You could be on to something! In willimasburg they manage to have everything from colonial tavern to extremley high end cuisine. I think disney needs to investigate it. It would be colonial American (similar to the vibe they have already set in AA with the Liberty singers)and not modern American so not to offend anyone. True they have LTT but I think they should make it more high end- competion to Bistro (why let the French always have all the fun with food).

It should be like the Regency room at the Willimaburg inn imo... http://www.history.org/visit/diningExperience/regencyDiningRoom/

Honestly it is something that has always bothered me. True there is other "american" style places in Disney but in the Pavilion the is supposed to reepresent our country there is a chicken finger joint? I am sure they can find the room. I have been backstage at Epcot and they could certainly steal space somewhere.

I agree its kind of a shame but I must say my daughter has enjoyed having her good old cheeseburger there on several occasions. Thankfully dh, ds and I can go to the country of our choice for something a bit more adventurous. But its nice there is one cs place in the World Showcase that has burgers and chicken strips. Still sort of a shame though.

I like the Williamsburg idea.

I have to say that it would be hard to please all the states if there was a TS. Last year at the F&W, there was a state represented (OK. or SD. I think) and I wondered what made them so special? What's wrong with MI and our fab Mackinaw Island fudge? :confused3

This is probably why there isn't a ts at the American Pav. :rotfl:

Honestly, I wouldn't complain about any regional cuisine they chose, as long as it didn't smell as sickeningly sweet as walking by the funnel cake stand!
