A few mornings last wk I took the boat to Contemp then walked to MK. I asked if I could continue walking to the GF and was told no because of the water. There does however seem to be a walkway - is it only for cast members? or never used? Was it ever open to the public?

I don't think you really can walk it. When you take the monorail from GF to MK, you do pass over a water way. The actual walkway only goes so far, then it stops.

I'm pretty sure there's a fairly large canal between the GF and the MK where they park the barges for the electrical pageant at night. There's no way past it. I suppose they could build a bridge, but it's all pretty marshy and swampy back there.

thank you
is it possible to see those barges if we look while on the monorail?

I made the mistake once of trying to walk from the MK to the GF. There is a lovely pathway that meanders it's way along the water, but it does come to an abrupt end where the canal is left open for the ELP boats.

Yes, you can see the barges, and we always look for them everytime we take the Monorail from Poly to MK. They don't look like much with the lights off. Look for it!

When on the monorail heading towards the MK, just after passing the GF you will pass over a canal. Look to the left and you can see all of the barges used in the EWP.

I noticed the exact same thing. The red bricks end pretty close to the resort, but you can't get over the water! I think it is too bad. When we stayed there last summer, there were a few nights at MK closing when the monorail and boat were both a really long wait and I was wishing so much that we could walk... so close and yet so far It would be about the same distance as from EPCOT to the Yacht club. It is nice to have a few choices in transportation that you have at the EPCOT resorts. C'mon WDW, build a bridge to your flagship resort and continue the walkway! :Pinkbounc

I seem to remember someone else also once mentioning that part of the area, along with the rest of the northwestern corner of the lake, needs to stay clear of pedestrians due to requirements for fireworks staging areas, since it's wooded. Or maybe I made that up -- but I think I remember hearing that. :(
