Why is my dog Nala pooping in her cage?! Help!

I tell Nala "Go home." when it's time for her to go in her kennel. And she goes in on command, but how in the world do you get your dogs to do their business on command?! That's something that I would love to teach Nala to do!

BTW, I'll remember to use darker colors for you "older" folks!;)

When we got our puppy, Everytime she would go #1 or #2. I would tell her good potty while she was going. after a few months, she knows go potty. I knew she understood when I the mistake of asking her if she had to go potty while we were in the house. She peed right there on the floor. Something she never did. Now, I make sure she is outside before I tell her to go potty.

Also, no playing until potty is done. If she would not go, I would put her back in the crate for a while and try again in a little bit.

Good luck.

How's it going Angela ?Ruthie

Hey Ruthie! Things are going a lot better! I've been re-training Nala, doing the poop and pee praise thingy, made the space in her kennel smaller and she may have pooped once or twice since the last time that we "spoke".

However, I'm starting to believe that Nala may have started to poop in the house and in her kennel because she couldn't hold it. Around the time that she started going in her kennel I noticed that her poops were getting kind of loose. Well, the loose poops turned in to full blown diarhhea. I started feeding her boiled rice and chicken broth and that seems to help, but it's still loose and kinda mucus-y. I think she may have some sort of bug:sick:, so we're on our way to the vet in about 15 minutes. Her poop wasn't like that until after I had taken her to a dog park and she drank some pool water that her and some other dogs had been sitting in. She been drinking and is still as active as before, but I hope it's nothing too serious!

I'll let you know what the vet says. Thanks for checking on us Ruthie!:thumbsup2

Well Ruthie, Nala is on anitbiotics. They took a stool sample, they didn't see anything under the microscope, but didn't want to rule out that she had a parasite of some sort. The vet thinks it is that ghiardia (sp?) bug and is treating her for it. I have to take her back to the vet next week for a follow-up. Thank goodness that Nala is still happy, active and smiling!

Well that's terrific Angela ...I knew she'd be fine FYI I mentioned bleach did your Vet? Wipe down the crate with it and if there is any concrete she has gone on pour some on there too (straight) When you get a chance join us over on the photographing pets thread then we can watch Nala grow up  Every day will get easier

Nope, my vet didn't mention bleach, but I'm going to wipe down her crate with bleach ASAP.

I've been over on the photography board already. I think you mentioned it before and I've been taking my time looking at everyone's fur babies! They're sooo cute. I'm also looking for tips on taking pics of Nala, so I'm going to be pretty busy! I started taking new pics of her and my kids yesterday, so I'm having fun! Looking forward to getting some action shots too...

Good just wanted to mention it again so we don't lost touch when this thread goes away...I mean she'll be trained & then that will be that for here and she is already in my heart

re-the bleach it'll kill everything so she doesn't re-infect herself, I also sanitize the food & water bowls once a week (1 part bleach to 4 parts water)
maybe its overkill or paranoid but I don't want to go throught that ever again

Happy picture taking !
