That it is so hard for some people to differentiate WOMAN (singular) from WOMEN (plural). I'm not picking on any single poster, but I have seen this numerous times over the past few weeks. One of my peeves.

I hear it more than I see it written/typed out. Namely on The Real Housewives of New Jersey (Poor example maybe, but it's the first thing that came to mind). Danielle Staub was constantly saying things like, "How dare those woman talk about me?" "What is wrong with those woman?"

The final straw though, was when she referred to Carmela Soprano as Carmelo Soprano.

They also don't know the difference between advise and advice. It makes me cringe every time I read that.

That one bothers me, but not nearly as much as the your vs. you're confusion. It especially irritates me when it is used improperly in an insulting situation, as in, "your so dumb." No, you are.

Oh and if you are going to write a letter to the school please do not write "Dear Mrs. So and So, I spoke to the principle about xyz." It makes you look like an idiot.

English isn't even my first language and these two make me cringe: would of and adding an apostrophe to a word to make it plural. :headache:

Is it really that serious? I mean, sometimes people just lose their train of thought or momentarily get confused. I consider myself to be highly intelligent, but I've certainly used too when I should've used to or their instead of there.....it happens. I usually proofread my stuff, but everybody doesn't have time to go over a post to make sure it's "perfect" for the professors of the board.

Furthermore, it's all becoming really, really relaxed in this day and age. People can see spell what they want--how they want --and it's not that big of a deal.

Making a typo or something of that matter is one thing. Contnually using the wrong word is quite another. Is it serious? I don't think I would use that word to describe it but I do wonder sometimes if people actually understand what they are writing.
Oh- and it is not becoming more relaxed etc. The English language is the English language. That is just laziness and celebrating mediocrity. I think we have enough mediocrity. Why not strive for a little more at least? YMMV.

ETA- See spell? What in the world is that? If I sent something to my boss and I wrote it "see spell" I would have been fired.

Would of could of should of drive me CRAZY. I have yet to see a person be able to explain how that even makes sense. I will admit that when I see a person write that, I think certain things about them.

Sorry, but what is it supposed to be? :confused3

Sorry, but while it may be more acceptable on a message board, it's not becoming more relaxed in the real world. People can absolutely spell what they want but it's a huge deal in some instances. If I get a job application with grammatical and spelling errors, it goes in the "no" pile. Proofreading and attention to detail is part of the job description. If one is used to being sloppy while typing online, it carries over to important documents, as well.

Plus, if someone repeatedly uses the wrong word, it makes them look ignorant and I have a hard time taking them seriously. I hate loose for lose, the interchangeable use of advice and advise, and random apostrophes. I cringe when I see "wallah." It's almost like people hear a word and want to use it but have no idea how it's spelled so they just make it up.:confused3

I am with you on that one. Drives me nuts! We don't say wulture or wiolin. When did the first letter change?

Take it easy, it is just an expression. Let me explain it for you. It means that could I have done something different, Should I have done something different, and if I had to do over again, would I do something different? Usually said when a person realizes that they have messed up something. Maybe it is a regional thing, but I hear it and say it quite a lot. Sorry if that offends.

It's not the words themselves that bug me. It's the fact that when said aloud, you are actually saying would've or should've or could've. As in would have, should have, could have. People hear would've and since is sounds like would of, assume that is how it is spelled. Hope that explains it for you.
