Why is it funny to steal stuff?

I had the day from heck yesterday. I work at Quizno's at a local bowling alley, and I had quite a few people come in from my class last night. One of them ordered me around saying "MAKE ME A SANDWICH NOW!" and just generally being rude, my lazy manager was no where to be found, and I had no choice but to put up with it as best I could. I was angry. Not to mention, one of them tried to get me to open the store after we had closed to sell him soup, I didn't open the door.
So as I was leaving, I saw one of them stealing letters off the sign. When I went in this morning, I noticed that an O and an M and a G was missing, so I told my boss. She asked if I knew who it was and I gave her the name, yep, I ratted him out. She told me to ask him for them back, and if I couldn't get them back, she was going to call his parents and press charges (may seem drastic but we have a problem with kids around there). So I'm asking for them back and his friend informs me that all of their parents know and just think they're idiots, but they're just letters so no one will miss them. I say that my boss misses them and is prepared to press charges, he then tells me "megan, we've never stolen from a store, and we never will, they're just letters, you'll get them back, chill out." He did steal from a store, my store, no matter if they were inside or out

It's the principle of the thing! Am I the last good kid left on the planet?! I kind of wish my boss would press charges and they'd be banned from there forever, I'm an employee, not a servant!

Vent over.

I can't believe your boss asked you to go get them back. :confused3 It is one thing for a boss to delegate responsibilities, but that is pushing it too much.
I also commend you on the fact that you seem to have principles. You were raised right!

Well, more to see if I could talk some sense into him so she didn't have to press charges, I wish she would though, but then I'm pretty sure I could never show my face in school again, I'm just glad he's giving them back.

I don't understand it either. I work for a Doctor, and somebody stole our business card holder. It was nothing special, but apparently someone really needed it :confused3

Someone stole my mom's Bible WITH HER NAME ON IT!

I think is not about the item the stole, the act is just bad, no respect for private or public propety, and for the people too.

I have a teen Son, and he had never done anything like that, he knows better. I would make him take the stuff back, pay for it and apologized to the people, and have the owners of the place put his name on the sign follow by " I stole these letters".

It is amazing what i hear at school! i hear about two times a day, about somebody stealing something, or is wearing something they stole. It is awful! Our choir went to a competion in Virgina Beach. One of the girls in our choir stole two 9$ dollar rings. The shop store cashier notice and brought the police in and the girl got caught. The police pressed charges. Her parents came down to pick her up the next and she has to go back to virgina for court...over 9$ dollar rings. Yes, these kids are the future, and i am sad that i am apart of it. :sad2:

Well, maybe there's hope here. Maybe they will read it and learn something. :rolleyes1

No kidding!

Children learn about respect for the property of others from their parents, as well as from their peers. The less respect people have for others, the less children will have such respect, and the cycle will spiral down from there.

It's not funny. I just don't get teenage boys I guess. The other night Dh and I were watching Dazed and Confused. When they showed the scene with the boys vandalizing trash cans and mail boxes Dh giggled and said that brought back memories. What is so fun about destroying property that other people have to pay for? :confused3 He wouldn't find it so funny now if some kids did that to us. It's gotta be a boy thing. Teenage girls don't generally find humor in causing other people pain and harassment.

Not sure I agree- the teenage boys I know are a lot nicer than many of the girls! I don't see it as a boy/girl issue.

Megan, you should be very proud of yourself- I wish more kids would speak up like you did. It's a positive form of peer pressure and even though they may tell you to chill now, I guarantee it will stick with them that someone thought they weren't so cool afterall.
