This not politcal and not racist at all mods,so please listen.

Why is it that all the road work done lately is from peeps that don't even speak english.I have A collage education, and these companys will not even give me A interview for employment!!!:confused3

I know I will be giving points and not be able to post if the mods see it the wrong way.I just want too say,put American's to work first!!!!!:confused3

My boyfriend is 23, and has a Bachelors of Accounting. He couldn't get hired at McDonalds last summer (even with a year of previous McDonalds experience, when he was in college) because they felt that he wouldn't stay there. Which was true, as soon as something better came along, he would have left. But I feel that that is true for anyone, not just the college educated. He now has a much higher paying job than McDonalds, but he doesn't use his degree at all. :confused3

Well, in fairness (and I don't disagree with you) how long would you stay in that job? Would you be willing to make a career of it? It's possible they won't hire a college grad because they'd have to train you and once they did, you'd leave for a career in your field. I know my employer spends thousands of dollars - at least that's what they tell us - on training. Someone who started in my group just left... for a job in their field of study.

If you truly have a college degree, and your knowledge of spelling, grammar and capitalization is as limited as it seems, then our country has truly failed you. I am deeply sorry. At the same time, as an employer, I have to say that if I received an application written in a similar style, I would not grant an interview either. Someone who continues to make these kinds of basic errors (e.g. using a period instead of a question mark, not capitalizing the word English), after 16 years of formal education is either careless and sloppy, or has difficulty learning, and I can't really afford to hire someone with those qualities.

As far as jobs doing road work, I'm not sure how you know the level of English proficiency of the people repairing our roads, and I worry that you're judging them on their appearance. However, even if I assume that you do have a way of knowing the level of English proficiency of road workers in your community, I have to say that I don't agree with your assessment.

This great nation of ours was built by immigrants. Unless you are Native American, you to were descended from immigrants. One of the founding ideals of this country has been equal opportunity for all. Jobs are awarded based on economics, and skill, not on citizenship. This free market system is one of the things that has made our country great. Sacrificing it by granting preference to one group of people over others would weaken our country and it's future.

I noticed all that, but was ignoring it; I just assumed the writing style was due to the informality of Internet forums, and NOT representative of how the OP normally presents himself or herself.

Fair enough.I treat the DisBoards as A text.I type fast and I am so glad you can point out this.:sad2:

Any job I can get now I would put 110% into it.There is A problem with PEOPLE like you that has too put every comma, cross youre t's and dot youre I's to make youreself look perfect.

And too top that,I think youre knowledge of the past is just that, the past. It's time to put American's back to work!

No, that WASN'T Mickey'snewestfan's point. As an employer in a tight job market (unemployment is close to 10% right now, isn't it?), employers can be very particular about who they hire - even about who they choose to interview.

Grammatical and punctuation errors weren't being highlighted to be mean or critical; it was done to indicate why someone may not even give your application a chance. If your cover letter resembles your writing here, it's not going to impress a potential employer. We do understand that you treat the DIS Boards as a text - but why? Are you posting from a phone? If not, then why not take the extra minute or so to ensure that your posts are grammatically correct, punctuated properly, and spaced right? If you get in the habit here, it will come naturally in all your business writing as well.

If you don't mind my taking the liberty - you wrote

That's a fair assessment. I treat the DIS Boards as I would a text message. I type fast and am so glad you can point this out.

I would put 100% effort into any job I could get now. There is a problem with people like you; people who have to make themselves appear perfect by inserting every comma, crossing every 't', and dotting every 'i'.

I also think your knowledge of the past is just that - the past. It's time to put Americans back to work!

I'm ignoring your criticism of the other poster ;) and simply trying to show the advantage of using proper English usage, grammar, and punctuation. Just so you know, though - presenting oneself well and impressing the people in charge of hiring in a positive manner exists IN THE PRESENT.

Given a choice between hiring you and hiring me, based solely on our writing skills, Mickey'snewestfan would hire me. He or she knows nothing about either of us - our experience, our abilities, skills, educations, personalities, or work ethics. She or he has no idea which of us - if either of us - can perform the job duties. I'm confident that my application would beat yours, simply because presenting myself well in writing DOES matter to me.

I am not trying to be mean, I swear it, but if you need writing skills, grammar and just a basic knowledge of the english language to get a job, you best sit this one out.

About 18 years ago my company enrolled me in a business writing class.

The teacher had a PHD.

During a break while the teacher and I were talking she asked me if I knew at what level colleges where teaching English. I ventured college level.

Well, I was wrong. She said it was being taught on average at 6th grade level. Why? because that was the level students could handle. Elementary and high schools were failing to teach at a higher level.

I was flabbergasted!!!

Well,my husband is a supervisor for a road construction company, and he has been doing this job for 26 years. Despite your college education, that doesn't qualify you to work on a road crew. My husband trained when he was in the Army to run the heavy equipment that is used. He has been sent to our state college to take classes every now and then. Alot of these men also just learn through years of experience. There are things these men need to know to do this job,and yes, they may train you,but even then, you would only be a laborer, and it is very hard work. You would be working very long days, with very hot tar, even on the hottest most humid summer day. It gets all over your clothes ,shoes and skin even at times. If the company had to train you do do this work,it would cost them alot of money, because in my husbands company, they are operating with the barest minimum amount of people, and those are the ones who they can and will get the job done within a certain amount of time. These companies have to bid on these jobs, and to win them, they have to promise that the job would be done within a certain amount of time and for a certain amount of money. Usually,if the deadline isn't met,it could cost the company a loss of money. In these hard economic times, the company doesn't have the time or the extra men to train anyone, especially if it is suspected that this person is only looking to work there temprarily until they find a job that they would prefer more, and then just leave, causing the crew to be short handed again. So instead, the companies would just rather hire back one of the men who may have previously worked for them and may have been laid off. And there are plenty of men who have been laid off, just as in any other line of work. And alot of these men speak English and are Americans, just like you are. Actually my husband has mentioned to me that he prefers the laborers on his crew who do come from El Salvador ,because they actually work hard, and do the job right, unlike alot of Americans who seem to have an attitude and expect that they will just come right on the job and make the big bucks without giving the effort that is needed. They will expect to put in an 8 hour day and just be finished, and be able to go home at that time. But it doesn't work that way. They may have to stay until the job is finished, and could easily put in an 14 hour day sometimes. And that is where the big bucks come from, all the over time. Anyway,I am just saying that one, don't look down on these men, because it is very hard work, and even the road crew companies aren't really seeing all the work Obama had promised to us all last year,so they are suffering due to the economy as well. And to explain that if you are really serious about applying for a road construction job, know what you aare getting into if you do get a job as a laborer.

i had an English professor in college who was Russian, spoke with a really thick accent, and she constantly would tell us we weren't speaking proper English. i totally knew her point, but still....it does get frustrating to hear someone who's first language isn't English, telling you you're speaking it wrong lol

Its a growing problem in the UK as well. I think we have done our children a big disservice over the last few years. We have told them get a degree and you will have a high paying job but these jobs are not out there at the moment and we have not given the children enough skills to get them a more humdrum but paying work. I was in a cafe on friday listening to two young girls complaining about work. One of them was moaning that she was having to do boring stuff that a person without a degree should be doing why should she be doing boring intern work? The other was moaning that she was being offered work below her abilities, in many places you have to work you way up from the bottom to start with. It was funny listening to them but sad at the same time. The kids have been fooled by the so called ideal life that they have a right to nice job big house new car. This isn't going to be found as easy as it has been in the past the houses are too expensive for first time buyers (not much rental in the uk) with big loans for university they have not much chance of saving for a deposit and the high paying jobs they feel are theirs by right are not there for them. Its going to be hard for several years to come, when or if it gets easier it will probably be too late for many of the kids graduating now to get back into the field they studied for as they will be competing with new graduates with fresh knoweldge of that field not people who have not kept the skills they got at university up to date.

Perhaps you're out of work for reasons you haven't considered yet.

I don't think there is a casual spelling for 'college.'

How do you know they're not American???

Well, obviously because they don't look like her!:rolleyes1 And the previous poster was right, this country was built by immigrants. And todays immigrants ( most of them ) posses a desire to work hard, in jobs americans would not take. My landscaper used to ride around in a beat up truck with a lawnmower doing yards. He now owns 3 houses, a very large landscaping/patio building company, employs a ton of people-and has 3 trucks and a lot of equipment. He works hard and so do his employees. You can't tell me most Americans will do that for years to get started, while living in very cramped quarters with you family, not having any luxuries, or go pick tomatoes, mushrooms or anything else in the blazing hot sun for hours.

Why don't you come to St. Louis MO and do some assessments here. I assure you that this will not be the case.
