I'm headed to Nashville in June, and am just checking airfare for now, and OMG, I am NOT flying America West that's for sure, they want, $3333, yes, that's right, for round trip from DTW to BNA!! DTW to MCO is over $600, yet LAX/SNA is only a mere $300 something! Even American is under $200 to Nashville!!! Holy cow people, talk about price gouging!! I was once willing to try America West for comparison, but if they are going to be this ridiculous, FORGET IT!!

Anyone know WHY the fare is so high? I'm flabbergasted!! OY!!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Jules

It could be that all the coach seats are gone and all that's available is first class.

America West doesn't serve Detroit to Nashville; they accommodate passengers wanting that routing through their codeshare partnership with US Airways. Due to the limited availability of codeshare seats, each way you would have to make three connections, instead of none or one. The fare reflects that.

You are much better off making your reservation with US Airways, directly. They have one-stops, both ways, and the roundtrip fare is $234.

This issue will go away once the merger is finalized, since the two airlines will then be one airline, and will sell each other's seats directly.

Considering the financial condition of the airlines and the amount of govt subsidies they rely on, how can they possibly be accused of price gouging????

I've found USAir to be high. I haven't flow them to MCO in a long time. I recently checked flights for June and they wanted over $400 for the times I wanted. I fly them alot for business and other routes are not so bad, I flew PIT/LAX last week for around $300. On the other hand, I wanted to fly to LGA and it was over $900! And they had seats! So I flew into Newark for alot less. It cracks me up that since they merged with America West they are advertising themselves as a low cost carrier.

As you can see, even AmericaWest, a long-standing "low-cost carrier" brand, sometimes charges over $3000 for roundtrip tickets! Meanwhile, US Airways is selling tickets for the OP's desired itinerary at a dirt-cheap $254.

The airlines have merged but they haven't merged their reservation systems yet.

The merger was official at the end of September. I've flown on both airlines since and they play a video about the "new company".

Thanks for the update... I suppose with all my attention on Delta these last few months, I missed the news that the merger has closed.
