Why I will never do a room request again!

Just returned from stay at Poly. Our best resort stay ever. We stayed at WL courtyard view 5 nights then the Poly for four nights. We stressed over what Longhouse to request for the Poly. After reviewing Poly's room via tikiman site, we put in the following request 3rd floor, (so no one above us), Fiji or Tokelau(?sp). We had reserved Garden view room. When Checking in I politely asked what longhouse we were in. My husband had my 3year old on the counter saying give us a good room please. Clearly the room had already been assigned and despite my husband's attempts, their antics were not cute and did not matter as the room was preassigned. She said we were in Aetorora(?SP) which is by Luau cove and faces the water and the monorail. My husband looked at the map and said "great, a parking lot view". SHe looked at him and smiled and said no it was not a parking lot view. I looked at him and could tell he wanted me to find out why the requested longhouses were not available and try to get us changed. My thoughts were, hey we are lucky to be at the Poly, be quiet. ( we were there on an AP rate.) As we walked to the room DH made several comments about how we would be looking at the parking lot and how they probably did not even read our request. Well, when we went to our room on the third floor and unlocked the door, we could see Cinderella's Castle from the door. We had a wonderful view of the castle, the Grand Floridian, the monorail in the distance, the beach and lake and could hear the luau music each night. It was considered a garden view room because soom trees and part of another longhouse obstructed some of the views, but not ours. WE were so lucky!!!!!!!! SO from now on I am not going to sweat it and let the chips fall where they may! Even if I don't get the best room, ( this past one will be hard to top) at least I'll be at Disney. And a special thanks to the CM for not changing our room after my husband got a little sarcastic!

LoL - good story and very classy of you to admit your husband's sarcasm at the time. I'm glad you had a great time!

I didn't see your post until after I wrote my post, but yours is exactly why I haven't called AKL yet to put in a request for a particular room or request a particular range of rooms. What if, by some miracle, the universe wants me to just get lucky when I get there? What if I should just keep my mouth shut and see what happens? I've just had this nagging feeling all along that I should ignore the podcast advice and see what happens. And then a few minutes after I posted my question (see below - I'll post a link), I read your thread! Just more evidence to me that I should follow my instincts and keep my mouth shut and see if there's pixie dust waiting for me. pixiedust:

Yay! A happy ending! I'm glad you had a great view! We are also just back from a wonderful stay at the Poly, and loved our parking lot view from Rapa Nui, since we could watch for our friends with a car to come pick us up, and not have to wait outside in the heat. There can be a silver lining to everything!

last year I requested Samoa or Fiji, and got raratonga. I was disappointed, but it turned out great. Nice view of the quiet pool, 5 seconds to the bus stop (we were on that end), close to TTC and GCH and the then-temporary food court. If we go back there I'll just let the computer decide where I stay!

You know last year I put in a request for our room at WL and didn't get it, matter of fact I really disliked our room location. So this year we are at CBR and even though it is a Mod, I didn't put in a request, but we are in a Preferred room to be close to OPR, so maybe I'll get the same kind of Pixie Dust. pixiedust:

I used to be a big believe in room requests.. but the last few trips.. I've made out like a bandit with the luck of the draw.

I love stories like this. :)

we paid for preferred room at Pop - due to our "love story" linked to Lady and Tramp - I request either of those areas - we got here - and the cm shows us our area, and she was quite happy for us - it was 60's at the end nearest the main building... my face fell - I knew it was a great location - but I wanted Tramp! so I told her our "love story" she went "awww" and moved us - its a tad bit farther, but negligible - she still got us near the stairwell so I feel great!!

but silly asking for a room further away from the pool and food court! :rotfl2:

Ooohh, now I don't know what to do!?! I was so particular when making the reservations (WL inner courtyard view only fourth floor odd numbered rooms) because I went off of the advice and pics of so many members on these postings. I had thought about just hoping for a nice CM on check in day and letting fate take its course. I (not my husband) can let the room make or break a trip. His argument is that if we are spending that much time in the room something is wrong (we will be in wdw with 2 kids!!!! should be out enjoying the parks and all else).

Luck of the draw can lead to some wonderful upgrades. If the room assigner is trying to match your requests and they are not available; you either get what is closest or what is left over.

With no requests they have the option of making some magic for you. We never make a request and have always been pleased. :thumbsup2

You have made this very restrictive, what if none of those rooms are available on your check in date? :confused3

If you booked Coutyard you will get courtyard that is not a request. I can see requesting a certain floor but why the odd number rooms.

OP - That is a great story. It shows us that you don't always get a "request" but sometimes things are much better than we expect. Of the last two times we stayed at Poly one time we got our request and one time not. We still had a good time at both stays. Sometimes we read things here and think that we can just request anything and get it.

Talk about pixie dust, well done! Glad you had such a wonderful room and view :cool1:

A similar thing happened to us early this month at OKW. I had requested a water view, and when we got there at 12:00 pm and check in wasn't until 4:00 pm (due to an airline change a couple of weeks before the trip-we were going to hang by the pool), they offered us what they had available for then. They said or I could wait till 4:00 pm and get the water view. We were very tired from the travel and just wanted to take a nap so we took the room that was available right away. It turned out to be right across the street from everything, and our view from the balcony was of a pond with a fountain, and part of the golf course. We loved it and were very happy!!!!!

Wow that sounds like a good room after all. Do you know what room number it was in case I'm lucky enough to get assigned to it? I would instantly stress out like your DH about being in Aetorora. Glad you had a nice time. Love WL too.
