Why does Family Feud continue to be popular?

I have never figured out how in the world Family Feud is still popular ever since Steve Harvey started hosting it? Is it because Family Feud has sort of an appeal with it's audience or is it because of the gameplay? Because it seems that in syndicated game shows Family Feud is number one second and third to Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune and always gets renewed for more seasons each year. I also cannot figure out how Steve Harvey was even chosen to host it? Because I think Family Feud has turned Steve Harvey into a superstar and I think this is what they had in mind when they chose Steve Harvey to host Family Feud and the show's reruns are huge moneymakers for Game Show Network. If they would've chosen someone better the show would've had better ratings and I truly think Steve Harvey took the job as a way to boost his popularity because Steve is seen almost anywhere you look on TV

Shows get renewed because they make money (or don't cost a lot of money). Where do you get your information about the show being "number one second and third" (what does that mean)?

As far as Steve Harvey, he was somewhat popular/known before the show. He stays on it because the producers like his style.

FF is an easy show to play along with at home, as is Jeopardy and Wheel. Can't say the same as Jokers Wild, Press Your Luck, and others that rely on luck.

I don't understand. You say "show's reruns are huge moneymakers for Game Show Network" and "Family Feud is number one" but then you say "If they would've chosen someone better the show would've had better ratings". That makes no sense - on one hand you talk about how well it is doing and then you criticize their choice of host because it isn't doing well?

I never understood why it was so popular 40 years ago when Richard Dawson was host. The format sucks. It’s not that the smarter family wins, but rather the less stupid one does.

When choosing families to appear, if any has a collective IQ of over 100, they’re eliminated from consideration.

I like the show and like to watch it sometimes - reruns too. For one, I don't need to be a genius to say answers/play along to the tv vs. Jeopardy (and I do get some right :) ). What I love about the show is that it's funny. The answers people come out with under pressure is funny.

I watch many other game shows here and there - don't watch any particular one. Newlywed Game was another funny one. It's more for the laughs and not the challenge if that makes sense.

I like Family Feud - Steve Harvey isn't my favorite host because all the sexual innuendos get old, but I still like it. Like someone above said, I like shows where I play along at home. I LOVE Wheel and Jeopardy and try to watch them most every night.

I don't consider the show suitable for 'family' viewing since far too many questions are needlessly suggestive/raunchy and invite inappropriate replies. Have no idea how they determine if something is popular or not.

I don't like Family Feud, but not because of Steve Harvey. I can't stand it when a contestant gives a really dumb answer and the rest of his family are encouraged to clap and shout "Good answer! Good answer!" Yes, I know it's staged that way, but it grates on my nerves. If I'm sitting downstairs and my aunt watches it I try to tune it out, but it always sucks me in and I find myself playing along. Maybe that's why the show has run for so long-even some people who loathe it watch.

I would say, among the reasons that any game shows, "reality" shows, "beat-'em-up" shows, like Maury/Springer, etc, are they are very inexpensive to produce (no known talent to pay, other than hosts) and, enough people watch, with human curiosity, to see what's going to happen.

I like it, I like Steve, but I think an issue is they are really running out of material, some of the questions seem to have very few logical answers.

Can’t stand Steve Harvey, who has a history of casual racism. I have no idea how he’s managed to survive his history.

Years ago they held auditions locally and my former principal’s family auditioned to be on the show. This guy was a DJ on the side with his brother. They had quite the personality. I believe all 3 brothers auditioned along with 2 wives. They weren’t picked.

A family that was picked included a guy I worked with during college. He was pretty arrogant when I knew him. But the funny thing was, they used the name of the son in law. So it was this guy, his sister, his parents, and his brother in law( sister’s husband), and they used the family name of the brother in law. I thought that was strange. I watched the guy I knew and he acted like he thought it was all corny and dumb. I couldn’t believe they picked his family over my principal. Oh, and they didn’t win.

I watch it because Jeopardy comes on after it. I don’t like games where the ones with the most correct answer don’t win. Making the last triple points gives which ever side wins that round has a big advantage. Of course they do this to keep both teams in race.\

Actually smart people usually lose on that show because they don't predict what 100 less smart people will say on a survey very well.

Name something you do for fun. Read Hemmingway...... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Personally I was partial to the Price is right and match game. Haven't watched much feud since Richard Dawson. Not a fan of jeopardy either. Haven't watched wheel since Chuck Woolery hosted.

I have never been a fan of the show, as I am not into game shows in general, but I think one reason it may be popular is that it allows the audience to sort of play along, and to feel superior to the contestants when they come up with a more popular answer. I feel that is also the reason Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are popular, because the audience tries to guess the answer correctly and feels like they do better overall than the contestants.
