Why does boarding

a dog have to be so darn expensive???

Have been calling around for our March trip for our dog since all of our parents and brothers are coming with us and I've recieved quotes from $27 per day to 40 per day.

More expensive then child care.... ridiculous!!

I guess I really have been spoiled being able to leave him with gramma's and grampa's in the past!!

Oh my that is expensive. I thought I had it bad with our kennel out here in Edmonton. I pay with taxes it addes up to $20.00/day. I remember 5 years ago it was only $7.00/day. Now I know why we won't be travelling for a while. I hope you find something soon.

Have you thought about having someone come to your home instead of boarding. We have a wonderful lady who will come to our house once a day (now we only have fish so once a day is sufficient) but she charges $15 / day. She will come to homes twice or even 3 times per day to take pets for a walk and let them do their business at addition cost.
Just a thought!

I hear you - we have two dogs and it is about $30/day with them both in the same kennel. That is what I paid for my son at daycare and they provided lunch, crafts and constant attention for 8.5 hours! I guess since the kennel operators can't really predict what their income will be in a given month (they may be full or they may only have a couple dogs for a couple nights all month), they charge such high prices in order to be able to make it worth their effort. Now that there are a couple older kids in the neighbourhood, I may pay one of them to come over and let them out several times a day, take them outside to play and feed them, etc. They'd probably be more than happy with $30 for the week!

The thought of having someone come in did cross my mind BUT Cricket is used to someone home with him all day and would go crazy if he was always alone - he spends his days in my daycare being 'loved' by all the kids. At least in a kennel he would have other dogs to run with.

I feel your pain.
We are going in March also and we have 2!! dogs. The costs out here run from 25.00per day for EACH dog to 40.00 per day EACH DOG!!! Not kidding.
Alot of kennels here have started doing this whole open run thing and kennel free....they cost about 35.00 per day per dog. Thankfully it's too stressful for my one dog....some kennels take over 40 dogs at a time and it's chaos!
We board ours in a double kennel and it's normally 30 per day if they stay together.....still. We are going for 2 weeks (with dropping them a day early and picking up the next day of our late return) so it gets costly...my family is coming also or I would hit them up for the dogs.

Uggg

Let's just say we've got 4 dogs and two kitties... and the cost of boarding has sometimes been more than our airfare!
We know it's part of having them as companions in our lives, but still... it's expensive.

This is the place we used. It is a little cheaper at 23 to 25 per day. But it's in Milton not sure if the $ is worth the drive for you.

OMG- you even have to pay for exercise at this place!!!! That is incredible! I have always wanted to start a boarding kennel (we live in a rural area very close to the 402 and a major border crossing). Gosh, I could charge half of what these people are charging - and consider myself being well paid - and probably make a good living at it! Unfortunately, DH doesn't want to be tied down on the weekends so it's a no go :sad1: I may have to run this by him again

Boy do I feel your pain.
We take our dog here

Then we have a professional bird lady who provides exceptional care for our 2cockatiels and macaw for 20 a day.

Then we have 2 cats at the house. Our pet bills every time we go is almost equivalent to an annual pass :scared1:

Jtdl, check out what your insurance costs would be before you quit your day job... I think that's a big factor pushing kennel costs up.

That said, we board our kitty at $15/day... and the people have been known to take her into their bathroom and leave the tap dripping for her because she is a finicky drinker (she'll eat anything... but she won't drink). Great place and great people. The same place boards dogs with individual small runs and at least one outdoor woodsy walk a day for $20/ day. Semi-rural Nova Scotia has its advantages!

Yup! Just paid $305 to board my diabetic cat for 11 nights. She's lucky I really enjoyed my stay in FL and spent way much more than her.:rotfl2:

... and don't forget about the "kennel cough" shot that your dog will need (another $30 locally here).

We are heading south in March too and I just took our dog to the vet's to update all of his shots now rather than wait until next month. I believe the kennel cough shot needs to be given at least two weeks before boarding anyway.

and with my luck we'll have to add a $50 exam fee to that. Silly me didn't think the IL's were coming with us in the fall when he had his regular shots so I said no to the kennel cough.

Our small dog is so spoiled that she could never be kenneled. So we have made an arrangement with a neighbour who takes her to their home for the duration. We don't want to get into the pet swapping thing so we pay them $20 a day. It's a win/win for both of us and our dog looks at it like going on vacation as well.

BTW - There is also a well-known kennel in our vicinity that also charges extra for upgraded pet kennels, exercise, etc but when my husband went to check it out, he wasn't allowed to go inside to check it out. And when we waited in the car to see how they "exercised" the dogs, he was shocked to see that they never came out of their kennels. When he went in to ask about it, he was told they were short-staffed and there would be no exercise that day. I'd bet a lot of money that the exercise is rarely given and is no more than a cash grab. After that, we decided that we'd stay clear of kennels.

I have 2 kitties..this past Aug I boarded them for 11 days while we were at WDW..bill was almost $500! WOW...normally, I have a girl come stay here that works at our local Humane Soc but she is pretty $$ too at $40 per day. At least they are in their own home tho and I don't have the 'trauma' of taking them to boarding as they HATE the car!! Plus, the house is being taken care of at the same time...

This is when having Pets gets tricky and costly!

Do you mind me asking who this is? It sounds a lot like the place we use (Creature Comforts) for our dog but I think ours was slightly cheaper. It would be nice to have another good place as a back up.
