Why do some servers squat down to take an order?

Well, that was rather rude of you Tiggerlover91. I'm sorry but I don't like servers getting too personal. Sorry if that offends you!
That wasn't done to be rude, I do apologize. It was my way of saying that was a bit funny, your comment. I should have used a different smilie, I can edit. :)

I respect you not wanting your server to sit down next to you or at your table. I have no problem with that at all.

My apologies.

Denise,
I'm sorry I took your post the wrong way:crazy:
My most heartfelt apologies too!:flower3:

It is done, and you are forgiven. :daisy: :flower:

I appreciate your apology, that's very cool on your part. Remind me if you ever show up to Ruby Tuesdays in northwest FL to NOT sit in your booth!!

Denise,
He he he. Don't worry, my bony hip will getcha if you sit in my booth!

I guess in a mom and pop place I'd feel like Dan does about it. But I'm not usually at a mom and pop place. And I find it annoying. I always think they're trying to butter me up for a tip. I've even had a couple of them sit to take an order. They KILLED their tip by doing that!

I see a lot of servers stoop at tables here on the cape. I think they are trying to be more personable.
I don't mind it.

LOL Dan...short order cook :teeth:

I thought squatting was odd the first time I saw someone do it, but I don't mind it.

Now one time in college, a waitress sat down in DH's side of a very small booth, one that was just made for one person on each side. I thought that was a little strange, especially when she left and DH told me that she had pinched his bottom!

I've noticed more servers squatting and I really don't mind it, specially if it's in a busy and noisy place. I'd much rather we hear each other than to have the order wrong because we couldn't.

I've had a server actually sit down, once out Outback, and once at Tony's Town Square when it was almost empty. To be honest, it was rather nice and we had nice a conversation both times. There are a few local restaurants we frequent and are on a very friendly basis with a waitress or two and it's not uncommon for them to sit with us once in a while. It's nice.

I find it more annoying when a server makes it obvious they don't want to be there or gets everything screwed up.

I work with some former employees of the Outback and they said it was required of them by management to squat at table side while taking an order. If you watch throughout the restaurant, they all do it, well except for the bar employees.

So, in this case anyway, they are not mooching for a bigger tip.

I don't think how the server takes your order should make anyone feel that we are trying to get any more money out of you by squatting, leaning in etc...as long as it's professional and accurate, I don't see why it matters. Believe me, I don't want someone in my face and hip to hip with me either.

I used to think they squatted to talk to my sons when they were small and I found it a friendly gesture.
I still think it is a friendly gesture rather than looking down to you - I also think it helps us to hear and to be heard.
