Why do some people ignore evacuation warnings

Most of the warnings are wrong. They get close but no cigar. Look at Charley, more people moved into the area of damage because of warnings.

Shelters are no fun. Imagine being herded into a gymnazium at some elemetary school. Toilets too small (kid sized). Water fountains too low, no privacy, few if any showers. Painful cots. Noisy neighboors (snooring, fighting, kids).

Pet lovers (a breed apart, most shelters do not take pets)

Looters.

Delay in return to home, with additional damage because you could not start repairs due to the delay.

Stubborness.

I resent the money I pay for the miilionairs who keep building their shore homes, that get wiped out every coupla years!

I like mobile homes (trailer parks) 'cause I always live away from them! The attract tornados and hurricaines like a magnet, so it keeps me safe! (It was a joke people, A *BAD* joke, but a joke none-the-less.

Like some said, I think it is out of fear of looters or for finanacial reasons HOWEVER I think it is crazy to stay in a trailer. If you ask me that is too much of a chance. I live in a trailer and let me tell you, this will be my third evacuation and I will NOT hesitate getting out.

It is bad enough being in here during a "normal" thunderstorm but I have NO desire to find out what it is like during a hurricane. During the first evacuation it was hard because I looked around and thought that I had a good chance of coming back to nothing. But the more I thought about it, I realized those things dont matter as long as me and my cat where safe.

I packed a suitcase of my work clothes, took a couple pictures off of the wall, packed a few DVD's and CD's that I love and I even put my hard drive in my car trunk. The rest I would have to leave behind.

I did not even bother unpacking fom Frances....least I will only have to load my car this time and not repack everything.

People in trailers......please evacuate.....it is just NOT worth the risk!! Shelters are not very comfortable but at least you have a better chance of waking up the next day.

I agree that anyone in a trailer under a hurricane warning should get out. But others who are not in evacuation zones should stay put. I.e., I live in an apartment about a mile east of the coastal evacuation zone, and we stayed. We could have left, but then, you risk getting caught in the storm while on the road, and of course you are making traffic worse.

So if Ivan comes our way, we will be staying put again.

Yes, those public shelters can be really miserable and believe it or not, you can't just get up and leave if you don't like it. That's right! You're forced to remain until the evacuation orders are lifted and that may not necessarily be right when it "appears" the storm has passed.

Several years back, (can't remember which hurricane) a television station visited a public shelter after a hurricane had passed and showed people still being forced to remain inside against their will. For some reason, the evacuation orders had failed to be lifted and these people were forced to remain. They could look outside and see people walking about and things returning to normal for those who didn't check into the shelter. Many who were interviewed stated they would NEVER return to a shelter again.....no matter what!

During Frances the National Guard had to be called in to keep the peace at a community shelter. Seems tempers flared and they had a mess on their hands. Sometimes, however, it's the best and only thing going for many people.

The guy I work with has a brother who lives near him. The brother stayed in his townhouse WITHOUT the windows being covered. The guy I work with lives in a house with metal storm panels covering the windows yet his brother decided to stay in his townhouse just because of looters. Ummm, risk your life that cannot be replaced for belongings that can??? And the brother is not the same after Francis. It terrified him that night. And guess what...he now has plywood for his windows just in case Ivan makes an appearance.
