Why do some pages load sooooo slowly?

I may as well pull up an easychair and park my behind here on the tech board. It seems I'm spending a lot of time here but I do appreciate the quick responses.

I have noticed that some threads take forever to load and scrolling down the thread slows to a turtle's pace. I have changed my preferences to not view images and animated gifs to help with the slow loading problem. I have a slow connection (about 26K) and cable and DSL are not possible for me to get as I live too far out in the country. I have this problem on both Netscape and IE.

You would think that having the images turned off would help. I don't see the images on the thread but maybe the server they are placed on is still being contacted. I honestly don't know. I have this with very few threads but just enough to be annoying.

I think it may have something to do with the amount of countdown timers on that page Bev. (There are 12)

With my cable the page loaded in under 7 seconds, but the scrolling was a bit delayed, and the countdowns only "refreshed" every 10 -15 seconds. I also noticed that your countdown slowed while that 2nd window was open... when I closed it your timer went back to normal speed.
