Why do some own points at different locations?

Being new to this I'm trying to understand why people might have some points at, say for example, Saratoga Springs and then own some at Old Key West. Does that allow you to book 11 months out at both resorts?

Thanks.

Members have the 11 month reservation priority as any resort they own. They cannot combine points from multiple resorts until 7 months, but may use the points owned at that resort at 11 months. With banking and borrowing many have found great success reserving with even minimal ownership at a resort.

Some of it may be just convenience of buying points at whatever resort DVC is pushing at the time. This spring DVC ran a promotion whereby current members adding 120 additional points at Saratoga Springs would receive a one-time grant of 100 additional points. That was reason enough for many considering an add-on to buy at SSR.

SSR also has the benefit of 12 additional years on the contract. When faced with the prospect of paying a flat $92 per point for the sold-out resorts from DVC vs. $90 per point (for 100 pts or more) for SSR with the 12 additional years, some may choose the latter.

Other people may choose to add-on via the resale market to save money. You can get pretty good deals on points at OKW, HHI and VB via resale. Those contracts run in neighborhood of $70 per point via resale vs the $92 that DVC charges.

We own 300 at Boardwalk and 100 at Vero. The Boardwalk was our initial purchase and we love it there. However when we sent my in-laws to Vero for a week they fell in love with it there (they really aren't Disney people). So a few years after our initial purchase we were able to buy the Vero points at the same price (with a current incentive). Now we use those points to send my in-laws or for other things like the Member Cruise.

I own most of my points at BCV, but own some BWV points so that I can book early December at BWV at the 11-month window, where and when it is hard to get a reservation unless you can book 11 months out. Other times of the year I tend to travel, like February and September, I have always gotten reservations at BWV at 7 months with no problem. The reason I don't have all my points at BWV is (a) when I bought in, all they were selling (as far as I knew at that time) was BCV and (b) I thought I would rather stay at BCV most of the time, which has proven to not be the case for us. I bought the BWV points after I had the BCV points for about a year. HTH!

I have BWV for food/wine festavial, Thanksgiving and early Dec - the standard view.

I have VWL for early Dec.

OKW for everything else.

We own roughly equal point contracts at VWL and BWV. We followed the axiom of these boards which is, for many people, to buy where we want to stay the most.

VWL and BWV are both near and dear to our hearts, for very different reasons. To answer your question, yes we want to have 11 month booking advantage at both resorts.

VWL because of early December, plus it is the smallest and we would be disappointed if we planned to vacation there and couldn't get it.

BWV because we like the location, and without owning there it is much tougher to get Standard View or Boardwalk View rooms.

Personally, I wouldn't buy at a resort just because Disney is pushing it, or has a deal on it. But that's just us. YMMV. :)

We own at the different resorts not for the 11 month advantage but for the dollar fiigure advantage when buying in and the incentives offered on a specific location at that time. We don't care about home resort or the 11 month booking window at all.

I first bought at OKW and it was love at first stay. We later did a small add-on at VB for the same reason ;) Travelling from the UK I want to be able to book my flights and accommodation at 11 months out although it doesn't always work out that way.

This year we bought a tiny 30 point add-on at Boardwalk because we want a few days in a studio with Boardwalk view (we would not want to stay there and not overlook the Boardwalk) every other year, and definitely need the 11 month window for that. Apart from HH (which I am visiting in October) I have no interest in staying at any of the other resorts.

We bought at VWL and BCV because we love them both and with school age children we need the 11 month window. We also have 2 different contract and use years. We have no problem keeping track of them.

As others have said to get the 11 month window at a resort we will use regularly. This is more important at resorts like VWL or BCV -- the smaller on property DVC resorts.

I technically own points at both Boardwalk and Old Key West because my brother and I bought contracts at the same time and put both of our names on both contracts...but in reality, the OKW points function as "mine" because that is where I wanted the 11 month window (and my share of the cost was for those points) and the Boardwalk points function as "his" since he prefers at Boardwalk stay (and thus he paid for the cost of those points). Works out just great.

We bought at BWV for the easy walk in location and later we were glad we did when we discovered the Food & Wine Fest.

We later added on OKW for access to the GV for family vacations. We also love OKW for our quieter, laid back just-me-and-DH-don't-even-go-to-the-park vacations. The rooms are spacious and relaxing for a hang around the resort type of vacation.

We recently bought 50 HH points so that we could get the 11 month booking. I would like to drive from MD to SC in one day and stay for a couple of days at HH before continuing on to WDW. It can be hard to get HH in the summer time. Oh and we bought 50 pts at VB for the same reason, kind of. Not to drive in one day, but to split the trip up for a few days. All Parks and no Pool makes me a grumpy Dad...

Y-ASK

We have kids in school so we have limited available weeks but really only want these 2 resorts and occasional BWV.

BCV for 11 Month Spring Break Guarantee.
VWL for 11 month Christmas Guarantee.

Summer has not been an issue but its getting tougher. Next in our sites is CRV for summer visits.

My wife and I bought at VWL on our honeymoon because of the proximity to the Magic Kingdom. We then started going every year for our anniversary which is October 16th and fell in love with the food and wine festival so bought 200 more points at the BCV so we could be close to Epcot. Love that wine and only 42 days until we will be soaking up the Florida sun and the french wine

We bought at BCV in '02 and did an add-on one year later. Last year we (wife and I) went to VWL from 12/23 - 12/28. Lucked out (?) to get a 6 month studio reservation. We loved it (not first time there, but SO special at Xmas). First contract is paid off this year, so we decided to do a 200 point add-on at VWL to ensure that we can always get a Xmas reservation.

Ditto for us. We've never used the 11 month window. We usually book about 6 months out.

We wanted the 11 month booking window at WLV and BCV.
