Why do people think that the rules apply to everyone but them?

While sitting in line to pick up the kids from school, I watched 3 people drive right past 2 cops, do something illegal and then get mad when they got a ticket.

Two of these people drove right past a cop that was double parked because he was telling people that they needed to move their cars because they were in a "no parking zone". When these two people got to the corner (less than 50 feet from the cop) they made a left turn at an intersection that is clearly marked "no left turn from 2:30-4:00". It was about 3:00. The cop backed up and gave both of them tickets. The lady behind me was arguing and refused to give the cop her license and insurance card. He finally told her that he would arrest her if she didn't.

While all of this is going on, a third car drives past the cop that issuing the tickets and proceeds to enter the school parking lot through the exit that again is clearly marked (Exit only. No Left turn). A second cop drives past all of us and goes after her. She gets upset that he had the nerve to give her a ticket.

As you can imagine, pick-up is a frustrating time. There are over 400 elementary kids that do not get a bus so there are a lot of parents picking up. There is only one road in/out of the school and it's surrounded by a large park on 2 sides.

One of the ladies that got a ticket called the school to complain. She demanded to talk to the principal to find out why they feel it's necessary to call the police to enforce the rules. She didn't think that it was fair that she was going to have to pay the $75 ticket! :rotfl:

People need to realize that these rules are in place to protect the children!

I told my DH that they deserved two tickets. One for what they did wrong and a second one for driving right past the cops thinking that the laws didn't apply to them. ;)

Wow, unreal. :sad2: I'm VERY glad to see that the rules ARE being enforced; I see people get away with stuff way too often! Stopping at red lights/stop signs is optional, parking lot lines are only vague suggestions, "Fire Lane - No Parking" means park here and run in for "just a minute"... I really wish that people would realize that driving is a privilege, and NOT a right.

Ticket away, policemen! You'll hear me cheering in the backround :cheer2: And if I'm stupid enough to pull one of these stunts I'll apologize, be upset, but at myself, AND I'll pay the ticket. :thumbsup2

Years ago, when my dad was alive and disabled (but before he had a parking placard), a friend drove him to Walgreens in a strip mall and parked, yes, in the fire lane in front of the store to make things easier for my dad. A police car came by, stopped, the officer got out of the car, and without saying a word - rightfully - issued Jim a ticket! My dad (who, naturally, paid the ticket) was, um, "upset" - but the officer was simply doing his job.

(as for the rest of your issues, I keep meaning to start an entire thread on those ;))

It's similar to the non-disabled parking in the HC spots because they are "only waiting for someone to come out of the store" or "only running in for one thing". Yeah, like that makes it right??

Glad to hear the police are enforcing the rules. Go figure!

The system is working as designed. If these people didn't exist, we wouldn't need cops.

Do our kids go to the same school??? We have a very similiar situation. It's frustrating for everyone and the principle has asked an officer to be around at drop-off and pick-up to help monitor the situation and make sure there is compliance with the rules. In our school, however, the officer is not helping himself and making things worse. I agree with him being there, but he has taken to putting on his lights and stopping people in the middle of the drop off line with their kids in the car....effectively blocking the line of traffic. He could easily instruct the car to drop their child off and then proceed to the parking lot to get their ticket. Is someone really going to try and run away?

I am police officer that has responded to calls like this. Most of the time the fine can be mailed in. But when they argue things like this, I tell them that I'll do them a favor and make it a mandatory court appearance. That way they can explain to the judge why the laws in our state do not apply to them.

Every day I come home from picking up DD fuming. Today, as an example, some rocket scientist honked at children crossing IN THE CROSSWALK on school property to get out of her way. :scared1:

This is not an isolated incident. I wish we did have cops stationed and giving out tickets.

She meant the lady who got the ticket, not the poster :)

:rotfl:I don't think so. We're in IL. I agree that they should move to a parking spot or get out of line especially at drop off. Our situation was in line as well but the crazy thing is that people line up close to an hour before school gets out just to be towards the front of the line. The cop behind me did issue the tickets while the people were in line but he had plenty of time to be done before the line began to move. However, the one in the parking lot did end up blocking some parents that had parked in so they had to wait until he was done. I don't really blame the cop for that tho as the lot was full and there was no where else for him to go. I blame the idiot that thought that it was OK for her to enter the Exit and didn't seem to care about the safety of the kids or the cars that were trying to leave.

I have a disabled DD (not at the school in question) and I HATE when people park in HC spots and the person leaving the car isn't the one that that tag/license plate was issued for. The law is no only does the person have to be in the car, they also must exit the vehicle.

Everybody feels that they are a star. Look how many cars that can be seen pulled up to the front of a grocery store with the people at the ATM. Better not say anything to them either.

We are sort of in the same boat at our childrens school. Dismissal is at 3:30 for walkers and that is the group that can be picked up by parents. Now we always arrive early enough to find a legal parking spot across from the school but don't you know there are three to four parents that pull up at 3:25 and double park and right next to where we're parked.
The problem is that our children get into our van on the street side because our youngest is in a car seat behind the passenger seat. My wife told me it happened to her today a car double parked beside her and she couldn't even get out. She put the window down and told the guy he need to move and he backs up two feet she was soooo mad.
I told her I'll talk to the principal on Monday.

Oops, sorry. I thought she meant the OP and couldn't figure out what the OP did wrong. Should I confess that I read it about 5 times too. :rolleyes1 :flower3:

Carpool is INSANE at our elementary and our middle school. :sad2:

People turn left across the street into the drive, people turn left OUT of the drive, people come to a dead stop in the middle of the really BUSY road to let their kid out of the car (and then the kid runs willy-nilly through traffic). :sad2:

Once in awhile DH calls the police because he gets irritated. They come ticket people, the next day the people are back to their old habits.

I have a confession: I actually parked in the handicapped spot at Fazoli's the other day. It was one of those that is in the middle of the lot. It was night, wet, the yellow (not blue) paint was faded, and their was no sign. I completely did not see the faded handicapped signal when I pulled in. I didn't know until we came out and I approached the spot from the front what I had done. I was incredibly pissed- but mostly at myself for not realizing what I had done. I do think that businesses should be required to use the blue paint and put up the signs. It's not uncommon to find places where the paint is so faded it's next to impossible to tell.

I hate to sound petty and vindictive (well not really), but I smile when I see someone disregard traffic law and then get pulled over. Hardly ever happens though.

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago at Grocery Outlet. The stripmall is run down, the pavement is awful and is asphalt and therefore black. It was dark by then, raining hard, and I did NOT see it. When we got back to the car (DH didn't see the paint on the ground either, as we pulled in!) we saw the paint on the ground and we were just mortified.

I think it's good that people are getting ticketed for their illegal moves near schools.

What's interesting is that just the other week, there were people talking about cops and laws around schools, and it was being called a "trap" just to fill the coffers of the cities...hmm.

The rules don't seem to apply to many of the parents at the school where I work. There are at least 20 signs in our parking lot that say "Staff Parking Only." We barely have enough spaces for staff members and those of us who start work later often have to hunt around the neighborhood for spaces while parents use our parking lot. There is a drop-off zone in front of the school but, for whatever reason, they feel it's OK to clog up the employee lot. There's also a drop-off circle in front of the school for people who want to pull through and let their kids off. They want people to pull all the way to the front before letting their kids out to keep the line moving. There's a huge sign that says, "Do Not Stop Here." So what do they do? They stop there and let their kids take their time getting out while the other cars are lined up on the street waiting to get in. It's just unreal!
