Why do people send their kids to school sick?

We are on our third year of homeschooling and I can say that my kids are no more or less sick then when they were attending school. Right now, my DD is getting over a nasty cold that she could of picked up from dance, her grandparents house, Zumba, the child we babysit, Target. I think that although some patents may send their kids in sick, you can get germs from anywhere.

I don't think people consider the fact that they are sending their sick kid to school w other kids that might have health issues and that illness is going to be a lot bigger deal for the child with health issues. I think generally people are selfish and really don't care if other people's kids get sick....sadly

Its not that people just don't care, some of them have no choice but to send their child to school when they have a simple cold. To be frank, if your (general you) child's health is so at risk from a common cold, then maybe it is you that should be thinking of other ways to educate your child rather than having them enrolled in a public or even private school.
And I say that as a mom of an asthmatic who is very much effected by illness.

hmmm...but, am I supposed to feel bad about the choices you chose to make? Those are things you are potentially signing up for when you have children, and that's my point. Because you've had all of these issues in your life with your child and what you can and can't do when they are sick etc, everyone else is supposed to just understand your inconsideration when you send a sick child to school to possibly put their family in the same boat with you? I'm sorry but with all due respect, I still can't agree with you here.

Never said to feel bad for if anything I feel bad for you. As I said I was fortunate to not have to make a choice about sending my kid with a cold to school. And even when my child was at her sickest I never begrudged a parent making these difficult choices.
As pp have said you have no clue where people pick up germs, hey a parent could just as easily bring home an illness to a child as a kd picking it up from a classmate. Illnesses are contageous even before symptoms so a seemingly perfectly well child could be contageous.
Am I to believe that you never leave your home with a cold. Don't go to work. Don't potentially spread your illness to your customers

My comment was benign, just posting a reply to the OP's original question and I did not read all the responses. Don't jump down my throat or make assumptions about my family.

Well calling parents selffish takes it out of the benign remark zone....

Oh brother. If I kept my children home when they have a stuffy or runny nose, my son in particular would be home 4 months of the year.

With 4 children I imagine it is very trying when they pass things around, but IMHO, it is unreasonable to expect a child with a stuffy nose to stay home.

Personally I do what I have to do within the policies of each of my children's schools. Some of the things mentioned in this thread are clear violations of most policies I would imagine. Particularly the one poster talking about her co-worker.

As mentioned, my son has reactive airway disease, so I understand worrying about them picking up a virus, but there isn't a day I go in there when at least one child isn't dripping. I do more for him at home during certain times of the year when he is more vulnerable.

It just isn't possible here. It's just me. To suggest I don't care about the health of the other children in my daughter's class....really? I've known most of them since they were babies. I guess I should have planned better. I asked him not to, but the little stinker I married died anyway. Then he compounded it by leaving pretty much all of the insurance to his mother instead of to me and his little girl and baby son. She got a new house and I got the 20 year-old house and mortgage, the car payment and the babies.

Geez

OP, by now you read lots of rude responses so you can see what kind of people are out there....and you can see why people send their children to school sick. I wish you a very healthy winter :)

Oh my gosh! So sad!

And she kept the insurance money? Wow! I couldnt even imagine. I'm so sorry!

I think this is the best response on this thread! Well played.

I absolutely hate when people send their kids to school sick. I have four kids and when they bring something home from school it takes a while for it to make it through everyone. We used to live in a different city and the school they went to there was very strict on people not sending their kids sick. If you did you would be called to pick them up. This worked awesome, my kids hardly got sick. School is not there for child care. It's there to provide an education. So for me the excuse that you couldn't take time off work or whatever doesn't fly with me. What does everyone else think?

I work with kids. And the kids stay home from school, and then the parents bring them out in public!!! There's been multiple occasions when I'm working closely with the kids, and they start coughing, in my face, and the parents are like, "yeah, they stayed home from school today." I'm like, whaa???? Why are they here?!

Jumping down your throat? Why because you didn't like what I said. Well sorry you don't like the reality that there are parents out there who can't keep their children home every time they have the sniffles. That doesn't mean they don't want to keep them home, or how did you put it, oh right, that they are selfish. And I stand by my comment, if a child is so at risk from the common cold then they don't belong in school or any environment where they will be put at such risk.
Ohand I made no assumptions about your family in my post. I see you have made your own though about people here. And FTR you are the rude one on this thread.

Sweet Mary and Joseph you can't be serious can you?

Never said to feel bad for if anything I feel bad for you. As I said I was fortunate to not have to make a choice about sending my kid with a cold to school. And even when my child was at her sickest I never begrudged a parent making these difficult choices.

Actually I don't leave my house when I'm contagious. It's common courtesy to my co-workers and their families. They don't wan't me there and my customers will just have to understand and reschedule. It's common sense. I don't think the OP was talking about trifling colds and such. We're talking about knowingly sending your child to school with a fever and sick as a dog. And no need to feel sorry for me, I'm doing just fine thank you. :)

Yep, someone brought their kid into our salon and laid them out on our chair while she got her hair done....then she proceeded to tell my boss that she had stayed home from school with the flu. Nice. My boss got the flu. Thank god I wasn't there. People just don't care or just don't use their brains.

See, that is putting spin on it. No one is talking about "sniffles". It's a question of would you knowingly send your child to school sick and still contagious? Of course sniffles or getting over a cold isn't what the OP meant.
