Why do people come to work when they are on death's door?

My DH is on the point system as well at his factory job. His dr required him to take all of last week off due to possible H1N1, and it would have cost him 4 pts (7 and you're fired). His dr had to do TEN pages of paperwork in order for it only to cost him 1 pt, instead. So, yes, he does go to work sick.

I have found extra PTO to the one of the easiest things to negotiate for. The harder things are stock options, use of a corporate car, apartment, or jet, a better bonus structure, use of corporate airline miles for personal travel, and things like that.

If you can't get the PTO that is understandable, but get some of the other things to compensate for it.

I'll be the one to ask.... what profession are you in to negotiate those types of extras

I get a couple of those things and work for a Fortune 500 company. BUT most of them WOW!!!!!!!

I am the head of I.T. for my company.

I didn't get all of the things I mentioned, those are just examples of things that you can negotiate for in a compensation package. I do have some of them and at my last job I had more of them. My last employer (at which I held the equivalent position) didn't pay you when you were sick. I knew this going in and the rest of the package made it worth it. I was only sick once while working there but I called in. I wasn't going to risk getting the rest of the office sick just because it would cost me a day of pay. I didn't like it but I knew going in that I would be in that position if I became sick. I think anyone else who's employer has a similar policy should do the same. This is especially true when they are coming in contact with their customers. How is it wise to get your customers sick?

ETA: When I started at my current employer we had a vacation/sick/personal time set up. I was the chair of a committee that designed and proposed the current PTO system we have now. It is better for the employees and better for management. I feel that these kinds of arrangements make for happier employees and as part of the management team that makes sense to me. Perhaps people who don't like their employers set up should try to do the same. If you make a proposal that is favorable not only to you but the company as a whole most of them will at least consider it.

I am not sure if this has been addressed or not...probably has but I haven't read the entire thread. Perhaps they go in because they are out of sick time. I know many companies if you take more sick time than you have available you can get written up. At my company our sick and vacation is in one PTO bank and my company does not allow unpaid time off. If you have to take unpaid time off for any reason you get written up and put on coaching.

they have either used up all their sick days/paid time off or are saving it to got to the beach or something else. It is also fun to get your co-workers sick, especially if you do not like them In Germany, you are encouraged to stay home and go see a doctor. As an American I quite often go to work feeling poorly and my boss will ask me why I did not just stay home?? because I am not puking or running a temperature is usually my answer. If I am really sick I will stay home!

If you need more PTO (or sick days) negotiate for it when you are negotiating your compensation package.

It really shouldn't be that hard for an adult to do these things.

as a server, I would not come to work sick. I suck it up and lose the money. hubby was a machinist. you "corporate" people live in your own little world. most people don't get "sick" days. those that do, I know people who have quit a job, and then get upset because they dont' get paid for the unused sick days. you weren't sick! that's why you didn't use them! sheesh.
I also love "personnal days". what the heck does that mean?
sometimes people just can't afford to stay home. now, I would never come to the restaurant sick,)I deal with the public) but hubby often had to stand at his workbench feeling "under the weather" he stayed home a few days, but , gee, you might still have after effects of a cold. who can afford to stay home everytime you have a cold? or until it completely goes away?
