Why Do I Keep Reading 160 is a Minimum Purchase?

We've read on so many places that the minimum direct purchase is 160 points?

We've done the tour and started the process of buying a contract at AKL. However, we choose 120 points with out a problem. This is a direct purchase. It's our first purchase as well. Are we missing something in the fine print on this?

Disney changes the minimum purchase amount frequently enough to make it difficult to know what the current number happens to be. First time buyers who want to buy smaller contracts directly from Disney need to ask to know for sure.

At one point, more than a year ago IIRC, the minimum purchase for new members was 160. But since then, Disney has done away with the minimums.

When the prices started to skyrocket and new buyers had to fork over $20,000 or more to just buy in, Disney needed to make it more enticing to new buyers.

There was a 150 point buy in which was later replaced by 160 points. When Saratoga Springs was marketed for opening in 2004 the promotional material listed a starting price of $13,350, the minimum point requirement for the initial purchase not printed. Once the promotional material was launched for Animal Kingdom Villas promotional material listed $16,640 for 160 points, with price increases that came into effect June 2007. Currently the 160 points minimum for an initial ownership interest is printed on material; however, new owners have joined direct for less the minimum requirement on their initial ownership.

My DS and BIL just bought in 2 days ago...new members bought direct from Disney...50 pts at VB, no 160 pt. minimum for them.

When I went on the tour in September, the guide said there was no minimum.

The minimum for new members is 50 points and 25 points for existing members.
