Why do fingernails begin peeling?

Has anyone ever had their fingernails begin to peel? I have been eating no bread/sugar for about 12 weeks now, eating fruit, veggies, chicken and alot of water. I do not eat red meat or eggs. The only cheese I eat is Parmesan. I eat some peanuts/cashews. Everything else is sugarfree. I am kind of bad at taking my vitamins, but remember about 3x/week. My hair is growing like a weed. My skin looks nice now since I have cut out the sugar. Maybe I am lacking a vitamin? Has this ever happened to anyone else? Thanks.

I was thinking that as well. I do not drink milk or eat yogurt. :( I just don't like it. My mom has osteo as well. I better get myself some tums!

Any time I wear nail polish it does this. I ususally take it off as soon as I can after a party of something because it makes my nails peel. Same thing happens to a friend of mine. As long as I don't put polish on, they don't peel. Too bad because I like polish.

Oh that's me EXACTLY - and I've tried every brand made for decades now.

It's like the polish sort of disintegrates my nails - they are totally dried out. I can tell you almost to the day when they will be ok again after I take the polish off. And yes I've also tried every base, strengthener, etc.

I have never had that problem before. Can it just happen after years of wearing polish?

It happened to me after 10 years of wearing polish. It started when all of the very "pearly" polishes came out and I first thought it was something in them.

I still try new things but what works best is to just buff them so it looks like clear polish.

Your mom has osteoporosis and you don't take in much calcium.

Yeah, I'd say that COULD be why your nails are peeling....Tums Tums Tums! It's cheap and easy!

Enjoy those antacids!! :teeth:

My nails have always been very thin and peel really easily. I am a cheese and milk fanatic, so I don't know that I am lacking in calcium. Any other ideas???
