Are you talking about Disney transportation or public transportation? A bus? A plane? Did someone ask you to move and you didn't want to?

When you fly sorry I did not make that clear

My kids are only 8 and 10, but I will always pay the extra for seat assignments. As a mother, I want to have my kids close to me in case something happens. Even at 13, I do not think they would know how to work the air mask (or even worse, the seat as a floatation device) on their own. Plus, I hate flying and DS keeps me entertained the whole time. He is very talkative, and makes me forget the fact that I am hovering thousands of feet above the Earth.

We sit together because it's our vacation, we like each other, and we're a family.

Maybe you don't have kids? I want my entire family to sit together. We love each other.

Exactly! Duh! Seriously...why on earth would someone want to sit next to their family?!? Ugh! OP and a million others like him make me shake my head sometimes! That being said I think families who want to sit together should make every precaution they can to get seats together before asking someone to move. If you are asked though, consider it an act of kindness.

But she didn't say WANT to, she said HAVE TO. And, given the parameters set by the OP, I don't know. DS was 8 and I didn't HAVE TO sit next to him, and he didn't have to sit next to me. Since United had that planned for us already on one of our flights, it worked out that we didn't have to be right next to each other. I don't have to sit next to DH or DS on the plane, either. Or on rides once at the themepark. etc.

For us, spending time on vacation together doesn't have to mean sitting right next to each other the entire time.

I enjoy sitting with my family when I travel. My dd, 20, is still a somewhat nervous flier...she is experienced but nervous! Go figure. I fully realize that when I fly SW, I am taking a chance of not finding seats that will accommodate all of us. But I do everything in my power to make that happen...I book as early as possible, I pay for EBCI.
Do I 'have' to sit with my family? No. Then again, I don't 'have' to go to WDW. I don't 'have' to fly. It's a choice. Have I given up a seat to allow a family to be seated together? I've offered but have yet to be moved. If I do due diligence, and want to sit with my family, then no...I am not offering. If flying alone, and there is no specific need for a particular seat, then yes, I will offer.

When DH and I flew in September from MCO to Detroit, there was a man sitting in the row in front of us, using many horrible racial slurs, and se* talk. I mean crude and awful. Our mouths literally dropped, as did all the passengers we could see as they were turning back and looking our way. This went on for several minutes until the college kid next to him started talking to him and changing the subject, often. When it would go quiet the "man" would start up again:mad:, the college student would then start talking to change the subject. I mean we are up how many thousand feet in the air, its not a place you want to start trouble if you know what I mean.

So, you ask why do I HAVE to sit by my daughter who is 13. That is why. Trust me, if there had been any children on that flight, and there was not, we would have done something immediately. But we chose to remain silent as every other passenger in ear shot, as the college student seemed to be able to deter him to other conversation.

Now, what if my daughter is sitting next to someone like that, and no one is handling the situation. You have no idea who is on the plane, and no way am I having a total stranger sit by my minor child without me. So we will not fly an airline that we cannot be guaranteed seats together. We always fly Airtran, and I was looking into using rewards for SW, but it didn't work out. Thankfully it didn't work out, as I was unaware at the time of the seating.

:: thumbs up::

My husband and I don't have to sit near each other. We just like to be together.

Nothing bad would happen if we were apart. But I like my husband more then random strangers so that is who I want to sit with.

Now for tomorrows flight due to my Alist and I'm going to guess alot of EBCI buyers we have VERY different boarding numbers (A17 and C14) but I will just save the middle seat next to me (I have never seen this be a problem since no one really likes most of the middle seats anyway so they don't care so much about this seat vs that one) and we will sit together.

Now if there was a kid that wanted to be near mom I would move if I could still have an aisle or even a window. But I will not sit in a middle by two strangers. If one of us is in a middle seat we want it to be next to each other.

Totally agree Shannon. I have a sixteen year old daughter. If she was sitting next to someone like that, she would have panicked. Not to mention she is a nervous flyer. We aren't very experienced flyers since I am so scared of flying. My other two kids are 9 and 11. Too young not to be sitting with one of us imo. Ideally we want to be right across from one another as a family of five. But its ok if we aren't...as long as dh is with two and I am with one...or vice versa.

Regarding the bolded... there is NO airline that guarantees your seats will be together. Even on planes with assigned seating, that could change. Weather delays, equipment changes, etc. I understand your concerns with your DD, but I would suggest the next time you fly prepare her that she may be sitting by herself.

There are never "guarantees" in anything. I should have not used guaranteed. We do purchase our seats to be by each other. If for some reason there were issues and our paid seats together could not be honored I would insist on one parent sitting with one minor child or we would not take that flight.

I don't want this to be a debate. To each their own. I was merely putting my .2 cents in. I always had that opinion of minors and flying. After the flight in September , something I never even thought about made my opinion even stronger. Also as a previous poster said, what if there was an emergency. Not everyone will take care of your child with a oxygen mask.

I have no problem with your opinion. I'm just trying to make sure people understand things could change and even with assigned seats, that may not be where you sit. You already understand that. Not everyone does.
