Why do Dca reservations sell out first?

It seems like DCA reservations for "starting park" are always gone before DL. But, I have to think that DL is the more popular park. There has to be a simple explanation, but what is it?

I noticed that too, and I just assumed it had less capacity.

Yeah that seems correct. It's geographically smaller, and is open a shorter period of time, so it would make sense that they would allow less people.

I've been noticing this more lately (e.g. wasn't the case when I was looking at reservations in December/January). I was assuming it might be related to Food & Wine, but I'm not sure.

I agree that this was not the case last Nov/Dec so I either they have adjusted the balance OR it's due to the festivals and special offerings that have been at DCA (Lunar New Year and now Food & Wine). Yes, DCA does have Festival of Holidays as well but there is also special stuff at DL during that time and the holidays in general are a DL favorite...
