Survivor' Hatch Sent to Oklahoma Prison

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Richard Hatch has been sent to a federal prison in Oklahoma as he serves a 51-month sentence for failing to pay taxes on the $1 million he won on the debut season of "Survivor."
Hatch, 45, of Newport, arrived last week at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City. It wasn't immediately clear why Hatch was moved or whether he will serve out his prison sentence at the facility, which is a hub for prisoners transferring through the federal system.

A federal jury convicted Hatch in January of failing to pay taxes on the "Survivor" prize and other income. He was sentenced in May to 51 months in prison by a judge who said the reality TV star had lied repeatedly on the witness stand.

Hatch had previously been held at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility in Massachusetts.

He would prefer to serve his sentence near family in Rhode Island or in Florida, said his lawyer, Michael Minns.

"He should be in a camp," Minns said. "The camps are the most comfortable of the uncomfortable. They are still jails, but they get to see the sky and be outside. It's bad for Richard, who is an outdoor person."

Hatch became known on the CBS show as the "fat naked guy" for refusing to wear clothes.

His arrogance got the best of him...

It's too bad for him, he should have paid up. However it does anger me just a tad that he gets sent to prison for somethign liek that, while someone else who has committed a more severe crime gets let out of prison early due to overcrowding. I guess that's just the system we have.

A naked gay man in prison...man, he's going to be someones...ummmm, well, I think everyone can come up with that one. I'm not going to say it and get into trouble.

hope he sleeps on his back :rotfl2: what a chowda head

He probably blew the money and had nothing left to pay taxes. A million dollars doesn't go very far if you are an idiot.

Maybe because he's just plain stupid. And I have this feeling that good ole Sue (remember her?) is chuckling somewhere right now....

Now he gets to experience a whole other kind of "Survivor".

Oh my god, i didn't even think about him being naked. Maybe this new experience will change his mind and make him keep his clothes on.

It might not just a be a book, it might be a TV movie too! I bet he' ll remember to pay taxes on those royalties!!

A well known radio DJ in NYC just had the same thing happen because he refused to file an amended tax return when the IRS found he had not disclosed all income. What a bafoon!

Like we all didn't know how much he had won. :happytv:

Some people just don't know when to give in and conform.

the thing is wasn't he on survivor at least twice, plus alot of other special appearances he was getting paid for. When he went on that second edition of sirvivor he already knew about the debt and could have used all the earnings to settle. He could also have capitalized a bit on his fame to earn some change to pay this.
My experience with the IRS is they don't want to put people in jail. If they fill out the forms and make even a payment arrangement, hire a lawyer to work things out, etc they can avoid jail. You have to be a complete idiot to get to the point where you have to do jail time.

Because he's an entitled jerk that thinks he doesn't need to be held to the same laws as everyone else.

On some level he knew he owed the money but for whatever reason chose not to pay. In a earlier article I read on the situation he claimed ignorance at one point saying he did not know he owed the money. Another interesting example of people not wanting to face reality is the couple who won one of the HG TV's dream homes. It was the one located in Tyler, Texas. There was an article in Money magazine a month or so ago about them. The guy could not work anymore because of an injury and the wife was an administrative assistant who made $30k a year. They moved from Chicago to the dream house with every intention of keeping the house even though if you ran the numbers it would take you about two seconds to realize that there was no way they could afford to keep the house. They were well informed by the HG TV people of what their tax obligations would be and in spite of the advice they decided to keep the house rather than try to sell it. As a result they owe thousands of dollars in taxes and are now being forced to sell. In the end they will still make out fine because of the value of the house but still it shows how unrealistic some peoples expectations are.

Yep, he tried saying he thought that CBS was paying the tax bill on the winnings. But then he was reminded that he also failed to pay taxes on the other earnings he had made during the year after his Survivor appearance as well. :sad2: Ummm, oops? :confused3 :confused3
